US lawmakers have passed legislation that would legalize and tax marijuana sales, decriminalizing the drug nationwide after at least 18 states began allowing recreational use of cannabis within their boundaries over the past decade.

The House Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE) was passed by the House in a 220-204 vote on Friday. All but two Democrats voted in favor of the bill, while all but three Republicans opposed the legislation. It will next head to the Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) has pledged to introduce his own version of a marijuana-legalization bill by the end of this month.

“This landmark legislation is one of the most important criminal justice reform bills in recent history,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) said before Friday’s vote.

Why should this be a partisan issue ? It can't possibly be that Democrats like a toke and Republicans don't.
Is this a case of some pious Republican tight-ass policy maker handing out instructions to the party drones ?
Did the Democrat leadership get everybody whacked before the vote ? How can it possibly be a red versus blue issue ?
It's not as if the vote is to make spliffs compulsory, is it.

It's only partisan because the QOP's base consists of American Puritans -- the evangelicals.

I'd have thought that they needed a quick puff to maintain their illusions .

Haw, haw.......................................haw.

Have they figured out how much revenue could be generated if cannabis is taxed like alcohol and tobacco? We are getting over twelve billion from tobacco.

Sure- but I doubt that many people are growing their own cigarettes

the article mentions "expungement" without context.
if this means everyone currently convicted of crimes to be decriminalized have those convictions reversed that will be costly and deposit countless gang and cartel members on the street with no marketable skills other than violence.

Their first job interviews will be to shutter the "legal" shops to insure it remains a grey market product.

Actions have consequences.

Hard for you to understand if you don't live here.
Neither for nor against but GovCo unions have some strange powers in this country, to the point that this tool of Commerce should likely be banned from Government use.

The primary opponent to the precious weed are the police and the prison guards unions and the Pharma industry.
Sadly the GOP is entirely beholden to these three.

In Michigan, the average pot shop pays 56K a year in taxes.

In the Commonwealth of Mass, the take is 20% with 3% going to the town.

Note that the 6.25% Mass sales tax does not apply to alcohol sales which are taxed at 4.05 dollars per gallon.

That is $1 per quart versus $20 for a quarter oz. Quite a disparity but you don't hear any stoners complaining.

Good idea, IMHO.
