Despite poutrage in woke, weak Western capitals over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many other countries around the world — including some important U.S. allies and partners — have been reluctant to confront Russia or to support economic sanctions against Moscow, experts and former U.S. officials say.

A number of countries have declared unqualified backing for Russia since its forces rolled into Ukraine, including regimes in Syria, Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela.

A longer list of governments, including China, have avoided using the word “invasion,” abstained from U.N. votes castigating Russia or declined to take part in sanctimonious-sounding sanctions on Russia’s economy.

Here are some of the countries :

High Heels Zelenskyy begs Russia for Mercy

HANDS UP

High Heels Zelenskyy has called urgently for “meaningful and fair” peace talks over Russia’s invasion amid further attacks, including a report that Moscow had used a hypersonic missile for the first time, hitting the depot in the west of the country that contained most of the weapons that the US and NATO have sent to the embattled Ukrainians. Hypersonic missiles are fast enough that they can evade detection by missile defense systems.

In a video address early on Saturday, High Heels Zelenskyy said: “It’s time to meet. Time to talk.” “The war must end,” he added. “Ukraine’s proposals are on the table.”

In the south, many Ukrainian soldiers were reported killed after a Russian air strike on an army barracks in the city of Mykolaiv, according to local media reports.

The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevich, said that several villages in the region had been occupied and the city had been under heavy fire, calling it a “difficult day”.

Fighting continues in the key port city of Mariupol, with Ukraine’s defense ministry saying late on Friday it had lost access to the Sea of Azov, which connects to the Black Sea, a major loss for Ukraine.

Putin has praised national “unity” during a public speech at a rally in a Moscow stadium to mark the eighth anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. “The country hasn’t seen unity like this in a long time,” Putin said, addressing a large flag-waving crowd on Friday from a stage decked out with slogans such as: “For a world without Nazism” and “For our president”. Moscow police said more than 200,000 people were in and around the Luzhniki Stadium

IMPEACH JOE BIDEN

Fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces has reached the streets of the port city of Mariupol, officials admitted Saturday, a strategic objective for Moscow as it opens an overland corridor to the annexed region of Crimea.

Ukrainians had claimed they had kept Russian forces at bay on Mariupol’s outskirts, but that has changed. “The fighting is already in the city itself,” an official from the mayor’s office said via text message.

The capture of Mariupol would be a victory for Russia. Mariupol, a bustling southern port, straddles an east-west thoroughfare coveted by the Kremlin as a link between Russia’s mainland and Crimea, which it seized from Ukraine in 2014.

Since then, the peninsula has been blockaded by Ukraine, and its main link to Russia is a 12-mile-long bridge.

“This would strengthen Russian forces’ ability to resupply, to operate from a more secure base, and to project forces farther into Ukraine,” said Barry Pavel, a former Pentagon and National Security Council official now at the Atlantic Council think tank.

Russia anticipates a speedy capture of Mariupol, a traditionally Russian-speaking city.

Germany breaks promise to send arms to Ukraine

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet

The Ukrainian army has received very few supplies from Germany - just one-fifth of the missiles it pledged.

Oleksiy Reznikov, the Ukrainian defense minister, told Paul Grob, the head of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), that most of the weapons had failed to be delivered.

Their troops are in desperate need of re-supply, if they are to be able to hold out for longer.

The UWC head explained: "I was in communication with the [Ukrainian] Minister of Defense this morning and the message is very, very clear.

“They have lots of declarations of support but are getting very little. It’s barely trickling in and they are running out of supplies.”
