Competition lacking among private health insurers

how do you explain fedex and ups kicking usps ass?
The USPS has an unnatural monopoly created for it by the government, it is against the law to deliver mail in competition with them.

UPS and FEDEX compete only in packages. It shows their great success that stuff that so often would be considered mail is now sent as packages so that it can get there more in a more timely fashion and with greater accuracy.

In short, the USPS failed totally with no competition whatsoever and all the protection they could derive from the government. The quasi-private company has failed in its own monopoly.

i understand that....but fedex and ups are still out performing...but i do see your and asshat's point and that is, like his example, they still have jobs and like your example, no one can compete with letter mail...

if this happens with healthcare....then PMP will be right and i will have to admit i am wrong

Wow, so you agree with liberals that the general welfare clause is an explicit authority granted in the constitution.

funny, I thought I said that if there is a need for something and no one is providing it, it made sense for the government to provide it....I don't recall any mention of constitutional law, the welfare clause or explicit authority....

of course, you were the one trying to equate health insurance with the FDIC, so I guess making rational transitions isn't your forte......

the USPS worked fantastically for a long time. But now with online payments and direct from checking account payments and Online advertising and such their busienss is suffering.

do you seriously think Fedex and UPS will deliver a letter for around .50?

I know that they cannot deliver a letter even for $7, or even for free... It is against the law.

The USPS is becoming a dinosaur, I'll agree with that, and they are smartly working on packages and speed... But I do believe that they will go the way of the dinosaur. They failed, however, mostly in keeping up with the times.

did you miss my point or just being a bit obtuse? If the USPS goes away so will cheap letters.

Nobody cares about cheap letters, I don't even pick up my mail more than once a week. Nothing is in it but trash to throw away.

Are you getting it yet? They are going the way of the dinosaur because they didn't smell the cheese and foresee change.

They are locked into it because of the false monopoly they ensured for themselves. They created the chains themselves that will weigh them down.

What could they have done? They are trapped by the laws regulating them.
Some laws will have to change regarding legal notices, Tax filing and such if they go away.

They could have lobbied for competition in letter delivery, freeing themselves up to pursue other means of business. Instead they keep trying to use the past "success" program during the present, it wasn't going to continue working and it still won't now. As long as they try to keep their monopoly, they are dooming themselves.

And I have yet to see one form that I can't file electronically for taxes. And that includes non-profits that I do the treasury...

Almost all legal documents I know are delivered by courier, not by the mail, because there is better accuracy and tracking.

So one is required to have a computer and internet access to file taxes?
More now than before do not even have landlines. I want to see people filing taxes on their Iphone or cellphone.

That will be good I will be able to deduct both from my taxes.

Hmmmm.....so you agree with liberals.

Odd. You're fellow Cons have written about three billion posts on this board, with the premise that:

1) Government can't run insurance programs
2) We don't need a nanny state to take care of us
3) the constitution prohibits the government from providing for the general welfare, and its powers are limited to the enumerated clauses.

Congratulations. You've just turned Con ideology completely on its head. You want government insurance programs for your bank deposits, and you want the government to take care of you in the case of unemployment, or disability; and you believe the government is well within its authority to excercise tax and spend powers on behalf of the general welfare.

I'm not exactly sure why you consider yourself a conservative after this somersault.

Hmmmm.....so you agree with liberals.

none I have met so far....

look, I have suggested a simple test.....if something is necessary and no one is providing it, then the general welfare clause would indicate the government ought to take action....

the government, following the bank collapse of the depression, desired a bank guarantee system.....no one was in the business of providing such a thing, so the government created the FDIC....

the same approach cannot even be taken for Social Security....the government desired a plan by which funds would be available to people in their retirement....now they could simply have ordered that everyone set aside such funds and prove they had done so, but they took it a step further.....they said we will hold those funds and "invest" them for you.....

now there were millions of others offering the service of administering to investments....instead the government required that everyone use their services.....

the result is, the government basically embezzled the money and used it for general revenue.....now, when people want to retire, the government doesn't have it....

the decree ordering investment for retirement was done in the interest of general welfare......the decree ordering that only the government could invest it, was not.......
