I feel bad for average Russian citizens.
It wasn't that long ago we had a president who complained about having to sanction Putin, and congress had to actually pass a veto-proof law preventing him from undoing sanctions

I think sanctions are great but what are your goals/do you expect from them? If you think it's going to end this mess those expectations may be unrealistic.

When you say "much", you must mean like five percent of the population.
I have been in rural Russia and never seen anything this ramshackle, though they undoubtedly exist in some economically distressed areas.
For that matter, I have seen ramshackle places like this in West Virginia and Tennessee.
Every single Russian I know has a nice car, dresses better than Americans, and vacations in Greece, Italy, and Croatia. Though Biden's sanctions are undoubtedly going to hit them hard.

In my experience, this is what typical homes look like in rural and small town Russia. They are obviously modest, even humble. But they are clean, pleasantly landscaped with flowers and gardens, and the streets are clean and maintained.
Holy shit, the world is upside down when I agree with you 100%.
Their superyachts are having their insurance and registration canceled, many are fleeing to countries and finding they are being detained (the word used is arrested"), their crews are unable to be paid so they are leaving as fast as they can, and their finding fuel is nearly impossible save for a precious few Russian tankers that will refuel them offshore.
This guy is fascinating as he is tracking all the known superyachts with owners on the EU sanctions list which is what is doing the most damage to the rich Russians.
