They did defend it...until it became inconvenient to defend. Now they're all pretending as if they totally didn't love Putin.

I don't even think conservatives even really opposed Soviet Communism on the principled grounds of human freedom, democracy, and human rights.

They were just afraid of losing money and property to a Communist order.

When the Bolsheviks overthrew the Provisional Government in 1917, the first people to resist them were Russian liberals and democratic socialists. Meanwhile, the conservative gentry and aristocracy fled the country in a panic.
