What are gunners trying to prove?

Taichiliberal

Shaken, not stirred!
As many as 12 people openly carrying guns showed up at President Barack Obama’s speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Phoenix, Arizona, on Monday, adding to concerns about the recent trend of private citizens bringing weapons to presidential appearances.

Those people are “creating an atmosphere that could be dangerous to the president,” a former Secret Service agent told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Monday night.

Joseph Petro, author of Standing Next to History, a memoir of life in the Secret Service, told viewers of The Rachel Maddow Show that these types of incidents were not something the Secret Service typically encountered — until now.

And Petro laid some of the blame with the politicians and pundits who have whipped parts of the public into a frenzy over health care reform. “I would argue that the vitriolic political rhetoric we’re hearing from seemingly responsible people is stimulating a lot of these foolish stunts,” Petro said.

Bringing guns to political rallies “could incite or encourage one of those individuals at the [political] fringe [into] doing something dangerous or perhaps violent against the president,” he said. “Maybe the politicians should look at lowering some of the rhetoric to try to create a more positive atmosphere.”

On CNN Monday, Time magazine columnist Joe Klein said: “I’ve been doing this [covering political rallies] for almost 40 years now and I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Klein argued that, just as there are limits to First Amendment protections in order to maintain public safety, there should be limits to Second Amendment rights for the same reasons.

“There should be a Second Amendment equivalent of the First Amendment’s shouting ‘Fire!’ in a crowded theater,” he said. “There is a right to bear arms, but there’s also a right to protect the president and a right to sanity. This is clearly getting quite out of hand. In general what we’ve seen in the past month is pretty frightening.”

Added Klein: “We’ve seen the celebration of ignorance and misinformation in this health care battle, and this — more than almost any other issue I can think of — is one where we need to be clear-headed.”

This gentleman is actually rather interesting...

I agree. I think the discourse has gotten progressively more hostile in the last decade. Respect is no longer even a pretense.

I also think there is an over reaction about the guns being shown at these events. In the cases I have seen, the guns were carried legally (according to local laws) and were not actually in the venue. Whether someone carries a gun across the street from where the president is speaking doesn't seem to be a big danger to me. Especially when they are carried openly.

The Secret Service is probably the best security organization in the world. And they didn't think it was a significant threat.

I'm going to say they are proud to show that all you need is a GED to carry a gun in those states.

If you want to changethe laws concerning carrying in public, then do so. Otherwise, these people are not doing anything wrong.

Trying to equate their intelligence or education to whether they carry a gun or not is about like equating owning a gun or nice car shows you have a small dick. Its nonsense.

NO it's not white trash gun toting truck driving wife beating shirt wearers are more often GED' than PHD's it's a fact.:clink:

It's absolutely fricking hilarious that you libs and anti gunners are doing everything in your ability to ignore the fact that the latest gun carrier that has you all up in your bunched panties was a black man.

So all the people carrying guns atthese rallies are "white trash gun toting truck driving wife beating shirt wearers"?

At least one of them was a black man. But he could have a truck and beat his wife, I suppose. And he was wearing a shirt.

And it took about a nano second for me to be proven right.
A GED'r has checked in. Thanks STY ie dumber than a brick

Who cares?

What are we supposed to say..."Hey...didjya notice that guy was black?"

Is that how you see the world?

Sad.

I don't think its any more stupid than the post he was responding to. Someone seeing them all as "white trash gun toting truck driving wife beating shirt wearers" with GEDs is just as sad.

The days of rational discourse and accurate descriptions of the other party are, apparently, a thing of the past.

Ah...missed that one. I don't try to wade through topper's spelling that much, anymore.

I'd seriously bet that not one of those gun toting NAZI wanna be's has an advanced degree.

I think you are blowing hot air. I am sure there are a lot of people with advanced degrees that are gun buffs. I am equally sure there are a lot of GEDers (as you call them) who do not own guns.

Whatever corrolation you can draw from any polls is basically meaningless in this instance. And I do not think you are saying any of this as a political or social observation. I think its obvious that you are trying to denigrate the gun buffs in any way you can. And since you have a degree you think you can look down on anyone who doesn't.

I have an advanced degree and a CCW permit.

Oh, so its the fact that they went to a town hall meeting carrying?

Even though they made no attempt to go into the meeting itself?

Well of course those people who go to townhall meetings are all GEDers.
