Frankly Speaking - Barney Blasts Back

The Bare Knuckled Pundit

Grand Inquisitor
Brash, abrasive, arrogant, caustic, disrespectful and condescending. These are the more socially acceptable adjectives that come to mind when I think of the unreconstructed Liberal stalwart and belligerent progressive, Democratic Congressman Barney Frank.

Needless to say, I am not a fan of Congressman Frank, his political philosophy or his penchant for patronization. In fact, I wholeheartedly believe his grandstanding antics, bullying tactics and out of hand disdain for those with political views different from his own are exemplary of some of the worst characteristics of today's patently uncivil public discourse. However, as my Grandfather always admonished me, I must give the Devil - or in this case the Congressman - his due.

At a town hall meeting in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Congressman Frank doggedly held forth in the face of angry constituents over the justifiably maligned House version of health care reform. Addressing a woman with a poster depicting President Obama with a Hitler-style mustache, Frank asked, "On what planet do you spend most of your time?"

Responding to the woman's query as to why he supported what she referred to as a "Nazi" policy, Frank dismissed her saying, "Ma'am, trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to argue with a dining room table. I have no interest in doing it."

At one point, the thirteen term Congressman from Massachusetts' 4th congressional district asked the crowd, "Which one of you wants to yell next?"

While I find the Congressman's condescending attitude reprehensible, I nonetheless applaud his willingness to stand before his constituents and endure the snakes and arrows of the public square. Unlike the Democratic Dragon Lady, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Frank at least demonstrates the courage of his convictions by publicly defending the bill he helped draft and shepherd through the House.

If that the Speaker and the rest of the Democratic leadership were as forthright as the gentleman from Massachusetts' 4th, perhaps the nation would have a better understanding of where the course they hope to set us on actually leads. Were there to be a candid, thorough, and yes, frank discussion of the bill, it's provisions and costs, then perhaps the public's inflamed spleen could be vented once and for all. Having done so, the nation could then move forward to rationally consider it based on it's merits, or lack there of.

As the old saw goes, knowledge is power. Empower the people, Madame Speaker, by enlightening them.

Nonetheless, regardless of the Speakers aversion to dirtying herself with democracy's dissonant discourse, Congressman Frank earns hearty Bare Knuckled kudos for his willingness to publicly defend the incomprehensible and fear-inspiring behemoth that is the House health care reform bill. While the Congressman's theme song on the Rush Limbaugh show is the 50's doo wop classic, "Lollipop", I'd dare suggest that Tom Petty's "I Wont' Back Down" would be an equally apt selection.

In a world that keeps pushing him around, faithful readers, Frank stands his ground and he won't back down.

Stay tuned for further updates as events warrant and we see if the Speaker has the courage of her lieutenant to face the withering fire of public opinion.

That Bahhhney Fwank ith thomething elth!

i'm looking forward to seeing one of two things in 2010.

1) that a majority of people really are too stupid to be allowed the right to vote when these people retain their seats,

2) the looks on the faces of the incumbents on election night when they lose.

He does have some brass balls... Of course the lady could have done her cause better by not starting off with mention of Nazis.

We throw that around way too often in the US to describe even the most mild government interest. Its use is now worth nothing at all except to get people to stop listening immediately.

Let us make it perfectly clear, nobody in the US government is a Nazi, nobody here is even thinking of stripping off the skin of a specific group of people to make lampshades out of their tattoos, nobody is convincing them they can shower and killing them in toxic gases... and those are just two of the examples. What the Nazis did places them in a special place in history hopefully never to be comparable to another future government.

yeah, if any Republican had told code pinko to fuck off the world of come to a end..

just amazing to see you all stand up for these Representatives that we pay their salaries treating the public like this..if he can't be more controlled of himself than that, he should be gone.

Yeah, I don't think I could support Kucinich after that mentally unstable comment.

Are you kidding me? He didn't go on Springer and claim to have been abducted. He said he saw an unidentified flying object while on a trip to Washington state. That may be a little crazy, but look at his 2008 presidential platform was and tell me you don't support this guy (Hint: If you don't you can't really call yourself a liberal):

* Creating a single-payer not-for-profit system of universal health care that provides full coverage for all Americans by passage of the United States National Health Care Act.
* The immediate, phased withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq; replacing them with an international security force.
* Guaranteed quality education for all; including free pre-kindergarten and college for all who want it.
* Immediate withdrawal from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
* Immediate repeal of the USA PATRIOT Act.
* Fostering a world of international cooperation.
* Abolishing the death penalty.
* Environmental renewal and clean energy.
* Creating a moratorium on Genetically Modified Organism (GMO).
* Implementation of H.R. 676, which integrates traditional medicine with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
* Ban offshore drilling.
* Halt all Biochemical Aerial Spraying of Pesticides and other toxins.
* Preventing the privatization of social security.
* Providing full social security benefits at age 65.
* Creating a cabinet-level "Department of Peace"
* Ratifying the ABM Treaty and the Kyoto Protocol.
* Introducing reforms to bring about instant-runoff voting.
* Protecting a woman's "right to choose" while decreasing the number of abortions performed in the U.S.
* Ending the War on Drugs.
* Legalizing same-sex marriage.
* Strongly promoting workers' rights.
* Ending the H-1B and L-1 visa Programs
* Restoring rural communities and family farms.
* Strengthening gun control.
* Legalizing medicinal marijuana and decriminalizing non-medical possession.

I oppose this:

* Immediate withdrawal from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

this:

* Implementation of H.R. 676, which integrates traditional medicine with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

and this:

* Ending the H-1B and L-1 visa Programs

Everything else is ranges on the cool to relatively cool. Barney is weak because he's ugly and he has that annoying lisp, Kucinich's UFO comment made him seem unstable. We don't have any strongly charismatic liberal candidate, which a tragedy.

Frank made two comments at that meeting that caught my attention...

someone asked him how private insurers were going to compete with the public plan when it was going to be funded by taxpayer money....he said no, after the first two billion, no federal money was going to go to the public plan.....that it was required to be self sustaining....

in the very next question, someone asked how they intended to pay for the plan.....his response was, a tax on only the wealthiest people in the country...

so, if it being paid for by taxes, how is this NOT federal money going into the public plan?......
