The media has played an important role in both mainstreaming the sexualization of children and in promoting the idea that pedophilia is a sexual orientation, not a behavior.

USA Today came under fire for citing “experts” who called pedophilia a “misunderstood” condition and argued that not all pedophiles harm children in a Jan. 10 article and since-deleted Twitter thread.

The article said scientists have found that sexual attraction to prepubescent children is likely biologically determined in the womb and that stigma against pedophiles prevents them from seeking therapy.

“The USA TODAY story published addresses pedophilia research by medical professionals and in no way suggests we condone this disorder,” a USA Today spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

To be fair it is not *all* Reichwingers who are obsessed by these subjects. Certainly there's a lot more on the right though than on the left. Conservatives have always had a morbid curiosity about what others are doing behind closed doors, whether legal or not. Of course if it's "just" child or spouse beating, it's fine to look the other way because a man's home is his castle and he's the king, yaddy-yaddy.

As for the OP, let's just take it as yet another 12b baiting effort and don't fall into the trap.

The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders said pedophilia is defined by “recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children.“

Scientists have in recent decades improved their understanding of pedophilia's causes, prenatal and early childhood risk factors as well as how pedophiles can better control impulses.

One of the most significant findings is that scientists who study the disorder say pedophilia is determined in the womb, though environmental factors may influence whether someone acts on an urge to abuse.

"The evidence suggests it is inborn. It's neurological," said James Cantor, a clinical psychologist, sex researcher and former editor-in-chief of, "Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment."

Michael Seto, forensic research director at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group in Canada, said there is more neuroscientific knowledge of pedophilia than ever before. MRI research is showing how sexual interests develop in the brain.

"I think as a field, we've accepted the idea that this is not something that people choose," Seto said.
