And, yeah...calls are slower right now. I fill in the gaps with all my DIY stuff. I don't buy incense anymore since I make my own soy/paraffin wax tart melts.
For fall/winter I make ginger snap, balsam fir and maple butter pecan.
I like all the oud-type scents...patchouli, sandalwood, nag champa, oak moss year-round. Months ago I turned those scents into little solid perfumes as well,
made with skin-safe vegan wax/oils.

Besides, aren't the best places to retire exactly the places where there's no money? I once looked at NW Arkansas for that reason.

Do you think wearing a seatbelt saves lives? I do. I'm against making it a requirement (except for minors) since I strongly believe in Survival of the Fittest so only the smartest would wear their seatbelts leaving the dumb dead in accidents or crippled in hospitals. Either way, they are unlikely to breed and spread their stupidity.

I have no idea what his many, many issues are. The place he posted a link to is far to our East, near Canada. I was off on the guestimate of distance... it's ~200 miles from here. Yes, it's a poor area; a good lot of it is the Sault Tribe's reservation. It's also where the Soo Locks are, that narrow "gate" where Lake Superior freighters traverse between this lake and Lake Michigan.
You're right about retirement; wise ppl who choose to relocate go to an area with a lower cost of living. We looked at several places, including Alaska and Colorado. But this one had closer proximity to the kids, lower cost of living, the weather and outdoor stuff that we like, access to good health care, the university, plus plenty of cultural stuff. We didn't find out till we got settled in that it also comes with the best neighbors you could ask for.

All good decisions. I took a move to Texas specifically with an idea of retiring here like my dad and Uncle eventually did (and several cousins).

Unfortunately, when meeting highly bigoted people, they usually are white supremacists like those you named. Hating Indians but not African-Americans is uncommon which tells me there's more there than simply a racist upbringing by slack-jawed parents.

He's a racist for one thing. There are some ppl up here who hate them because their treaty rights give them the ability to hunt and/or fish outside of state seasons for those activities. Where he lives, in Wisconsin, there are instances every year of natives being shot at by whites while fishing for walleyes that are out of season for non-indigenous fishermen.
My late brother moved there because of his job, loved it and asked for no more transfers. He lived in Floresville, near San Antonio. The other brother moved there in the late 70s also for business (he was and is an accountant). He's in Richardson.

Racists usually tend to hate the POC that are in their proximity. Up here, that tends to be the indigenous ppl rather than Hispanic or black ppl.

I thought Stone was in some shitty Florida town, not up north. Understood about local hatreds. When I visited some in-laws in the northeast (Bethlehem, PA) it was Puerto Ricans.
