Manchin accepted over $400,000 from energy companies

As Manchin Blocks Climate Plan, His State Can’t Hold Back Floods

FARMINGTON, W.Va. — In Senator Joe Manchin’s hometown, a flood-prone hamlet of about 200 homes that hugs a curve on a shallow creek, the rain is getting worse.

Those storms swell the river, called Buffalo Creek, inundating homes along its banks. They burst the streams that spill down the hills on either side of this former coal-mining town, pushing water into basements. They saturate the ground, seeping into Farmington’s aging pipes and overwhelming its sewage treatment system.

Climate change is warming the air, allowing it to hold more moisture, which causes more frequent and intense rainfall. And no state in the contiguous United States is more exposed to flood damage than West Virginia, according to data released last week.

Joe Manchin raised over $400,000 from donors in the energy industry in the third quarter, including some from donors that normally give to Republicans, according to his latest filing with the Federal Election Commission.

Manchin has opposed certain climate-related stipulations within the Democrats' proposed $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill. The legislation also includes expanded safety net programs for workers and families, lower prescription drug prices, and billions of dollars toward healthcare benefits for seniors.

do you idiots still think that people have caused climate change?.....

Manchin and Sinema should be good Dems and vote for both Biden bills. Then because of their beliefs, they should have WV and Arizona opt-out of the programs due to some principles. Then they will be good dems and be voting for what they claim their states want. They would surely be popular in their home states. and would not piss off the party. It would be a win/win for them.

What is the problem supposed to be?

Manchin accepts “political donations” from a group would vote against a deal that would restrict them, lessen their profits or whatever … but we’re giving Schumer (and others like him…his was the only one I looked up) and those like him a pass for accepting money from a group that would benefit from the measure passing. I see a double standard.

The bill is held up by Manchin. What is the double standard you see?

Manchin is doing what his state and political donors desire and it’s bad…

Schumer and others are doing what their states (supposedly) and political donors want and it’s good …

Double standard, imo

Griping about Manchin or expecting him to vote for this is …. wait for it …. asking him to vote “against his own best interest.”

You lost me. All Democrats want to pass this bill. Only Manchin (and Sinema) are holding it up.

Can WV and Arizona opt out of the tax increases that come with it too?
