the power to tax

includes the power to destroy

but, if we are to have government and a social safety net, how do we pay for it

can we afford to not have a social safety net?

can we afford to not have health care for all?

can we afford not to provide for those cast aside by our system

remember the cost of a social safety net goes up as tax revenue goes down

the government needs to plan for downturns in tax revenue to provide for increased costs of the social safety net

or do we just toss under a bus those that got screwed by our quasi-capitalist system

The proper course is to give americans a chance to succeed by stopping outsourcing all the jobs to slaves overseas.

When is enough enough for the left? A tiny monority is already paying a huge majority of taxes - and Obama, Reid, and Pelosi want more from them

If Obama gets his way, this minority will be paying close to 60% of their income to the government

Who pays taxes - and how much?
The federal tax burden varies widely across income groups, but a surprising number owe little if anything in income taxes.

The highest earners pay the lion's share of the dollars Uncle Sam collects.

The top fifth of households made 56% of pre-tax income in 2006 but paid 86% of all individual income tax revenue collected, according to the most recent data available from the Congressional Budget Office.

Narrowing in further: The top 1% of households, which made 19% of pre-tax income, paid 39% of all individual income taxes.

The trend is similar if you count income taxes, social insurance taxes, excise taxes and corporate income taxes (such as capital gains) combined. The top fifth of households paid 69% of all federal taxes. The top 1% paid 28%.

But researchers also note that the highest income taxpayers derive the most benefits from the tax cuts put in place since 2001.

Next year, as a result of all those tax cuts, filers making more than $1 million will enjoy a 7.7% average boost in their after-tax income relative to what they would have if the tax cuts weren't in place, according to the Tax Policy Center. Middle-income households, by comparison, will see an average boost of 2.6%.

Many pay no income tax or very little
A Tax Foundation survey found 56% of Americans think the amount of federal income tax they pay is too high. Those most likely to feel that way, according to the survey, include those making between $35,000 and $50,000.

But once the various tax breaks to which they're entitled are counted, the burdens of low- and middle-income tax filers as a group has been fairly low.

The Tax Policy Center estimates that for 2009, 43% of tax units (most of which are lower income households that may or may not file a return) will have no income tax liability or will have a negative income tax liability, meaning the government will actually pay them.

When measuring the tax burdens from income tax and payroll tax combined, the Tax Policy Center estimates nearly 12% of tax units will have zero or negative liability.

As for everyone else, it's likely their net income tax burden will not be high.

For example, in 2005, just under one in 10 filers owed more than 15% of their income in federal income tax, said Roberton Williams, senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center. Roughly 70% of them had incomes over $100,000.

red states lost

so you advocate throwing 'losers' under the bus...

I advocate stopping a tiny minority paying a majority of taxes so the majority will stop getting their money

Again, when is enough enough for liberals? The top 1% make 18% of the money but pay 40% of all fedral income taxes

consider if you will what portion of their income goes to living expenses and what portion goes to non-essential living expenses by income

also, those that have more to lose by an unstable society should pay more to keep said society stable...like my wife and i - total real assets exceed 1.5 million

first thing we have to do is practice some tough love and limit spending of non members of this country as well as limit provisions to bottom feeders. Once that expense is off the books then we can talk about healthcare for all.

so the afore mentioned get thrown under the bus...

so people have a 'right' to a guaranteed income? to medical benefits and care? could you please tell me what portion of the constitution tells me I have that right?

note the preamble to the constitution, however, forget the constitution for a minute and consider moral behavior for nations and people

or do you think that throwing people under the bus is the way to go

Considering over half their income go to government in the form of taxes - not much left for investment and living expenses

Look at CA and how "rich" people are leaving the state and and the libs are wondering why.

Of course, libs think all they have to do is jack up taxes on those still there and all will be fine

until the world reaches the point where someone who is capable of working does NOT see earning a dollar a day as an improvement, jobs are going to gravitate to places where workers are paid a dollar a day.....

how do you propose "stopping" outsourcing?......

It's time the rich paid their fair share.

The top 1% are currently paying 40% of all federal income taxes

The top 10% of paying 65% of all federal income taxes

The top 25% are paying 86% of all federal income taxes

How much more do you demand they pay?

just a little more:cof1:

You once posted "as much as we can squeeze out of them"

"Rich" libs are fleeing states like Ca, MD, NY, and NJ since they are being taxed way to much

Only libs would want to punish achievement, and it looks like Obama is keeping his promise to spread the wealth around

As he does that, his poll numbers for his policies and personal approval are being spread downward

If he gets his Obamacare tax increase he will break another promise (and one of you talking points Conmanfrommaine) that tax rates will be no higher then they were under Clinton
