which repub moron told me racism was dead

Plenty of racism exists and if someone said it was dead, they are a moron.

It does exist on both sides of the political isle.

they handcuffed him and took him to jail after seeing his id. You must be a kkk member or at least that racist. would you want your dad hauled off to jail for breaking into his own house even after he showed he owned it. spurt?
Somebody calls for them to investigate, they try and this guy follows them around screaming at them the whole time. He got arrested for hassling the cops, they'll either get punished or not depending on whether it is something they are allowed to do (I think probably punished). I mean, if the cops showed up at my house and I started screaming at them about how they were hassling me, I'd likely get some new bracelets clamped "in front of my back".

Now if they showed up because they saw him through a window and arrested him without any regard to investigation just because he was a black guy in a house then I think you might have a point.

no way he goes to jail if white, and you don't know he followed them around screaming. Cop would not give his name and badge number which I believe he is supposed to.
The class thing would have been for the cop to appologize to him that they were responding to a call by a neighbor and leave.

your fucking racist you kkk member
Dude is old like 60, has an id with his home address.
Cope sees black and thinks no way he owns this.
it's extreemly racist

Top,

you are, well, over the top on this one. While I agree they shouldn't have arrested him, from the way the story was written, he had no reason to refuse showing his ID to the cops in the first place. A neighbor, who likely knew who lived there, saw two men forcing their way in to his home and called the cops.

Had that been me trying to get in my home, I would expect the cops to make sure I was the one that lived there. Now, obviously we are dealing with a second hand account of what occurred, so take that with a grain of salt.

Again, I wouldn't have arrested the guy, no matter how much of an ass he was/wasn't being. But I think it is a bit weak to call this racial profiling. His door was stuck, but to the neighbor it looked like someone was forcing their way in. The cops did not profile this guy. Asking for his ID makes sense in this scenario. If the guy refused to do so, then that would naturally raise the thought that he might not live there. Again, not profiling.

That said, I am not stating that race wasn't a factor at all, but according to what the article tells us, it seems a bit blown out of proportion.

Not a problem.

They asked him to just come out and according to the story he immediately asked them "Why? Because I am black!" then refused to give identification, and as the story states, followed them out continuing to hassle them.

For a preeminent scholar the man didn't show much wisdom. If I did this same thing, I would very likely get arrested and released on my own recognizance.

you really are an idiot....read the facts again and tell me why he was arrested...it is clear you have no grasp of the facts as you think he was taken to jail....he wasn't, he was booked and released, from what i read he never stepped foot behind bars

and good lord, a white person doesn't see racism so they must be racist....fucking lunatic

Spelling police out again! You should move to Afganistan and see if you can get a job with the beard police, almost as usefull!

Listen moron, it was the IRONY that I was pointing out. I know you are not clever enough to comprehend IRONY, so I won't bother explaining it to you.

exactly, as i said the prof wanted this to happen....that is why spintop refuses to discuss the facts and repeatedly says he was arrested solely for being in his house - which is a false according to what we know so far

meadowmuffins story....i think the prof protesteth to much and wanted this arrest...why was he an asshole to the officers in the first place...

no racism here
WHAT?? Can you say "Double Standard". You'd be howling if he had been a white man and the officer was asking him for his gun permit. A police officer hassles you for ID while your in your own home and you think the resident is out of line for being pissed off?

Dude you're nuts.

Gates — the director of Harvard's W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research — initially refused to show the officer his identification, but then gave him a Harvard University ID card, according to police.

"Gates continued to yell at me, accusing me of racial bias and continued to tell me that I had not heard the last of him," the officer wrote.

Gates said he turned over his driver's license and Harvard ID — both with his photos — and repeatedly asked for the name and badge number of the officer, who refused. He said he then followed the officer as he left his house onto his front porch, where he was handcuffed in front of other officers, Gates said in a statement released by his attorney, fellow Harvard scholar Charles Ogletree, on a Web site Gates oversees, TheRoot.com

He initially didn't cooperate, then AS WRITTEN HE GAVE TWO ID'S. Then the racist muthafucker arrested him.
Did the prof act properly no, was the cop way more out of line. fucking a

He didn't refuse to show the cops his ID. In fact he showed them two. His Howard Univeristy ID and his Drivers License.

What would be nice would be to have a video/audio of this encounter. How did the police approach this. Did they knock on the door and courtesly ask him questions or did they storn up with weapns drawn yelling "Up aganist the wall Mofo"?

My guess is the man questioned the cops motives and they over reacted.

I don't doubt that racism is alive and well and racial profiling does occur and may have occurred here.

But a word of advice to the Howard Prof that my dad used to give me. There is such a thing as being dead right but still dead.

That's not correct. According to the AP story he provided them two forms of photo ID's. It was after he gave them ID that he left the house, went onto his porch and was argumentative with the police officers about their motives. It was then that they arrested him for disorderly conduct (on his own porch?). If anyone was hassling anyone here it was the police officers. I don't blame the man at all for being upset. I would have been too.

Looks to me like both sides got emotional and over reacted.

Yes, he eventually provided them with the ID, but according to the article, he originally refused to do so. When asked to come outside he said 'why because I'm black'... again this is just according to the article and police report.

My guess is that they he originally over reacted which prompted the cops to over react as well.

So, if you had your front door jammed and were trying to force it open and a neighbor called the cops because it LOOKED like someone was breaking in.... you would be pissed at the cops for showing up and asking for ID?

Had the cops not shown up we probably would have had to hear 'well if it were a white mans house they would have shown up right away to investigate'.

both side prob overreacted
but you don't handcuff a harvard prof once he's proven it.
Cops are under a lot of stress so I wouldn't fire him but I'd put him on some probation for RACISM
Chris Rock had a crazy joke about cops breaking into a black mans home and taking down all the prictures he brought in so they wouldn't think he was robbing it.

Well, I suspected that right wingers don't really know what a liberal, moderate, centrist or libertarian are. Thanks for proving me right.

If Topper is a Libertarian then Damo and Adam are Spanish Flamingo Dancers.
LOL. I don't know how to do the Flamenco... or the Flamingo for that matter...

:D

Read the story again, did he first refuse?

And yes, it looks like both sides got emotional. However getting arrested for something like this would be par for the course where I grew up. Shouting, "Why, because I am black and in America?" doesn't give you a free pass, nor does being "white" and definitely not Native American. If you act like an ass and harass the cops they will eventually arrest you. If I were his captain though, he'd get reprimanded for arresting a Harvard Professor, because that's just stupid.

:D

I'm potentially the most socially liberal on the board, but because I'm fiscally conservative and totally reject the libtards anti-corp junior high bs someone calls me a libertarian.
Obviously they haven't seen the 1,000 post against prohibition and the racist republicans supporting jailing innocent smokers.
