Obama chooses Ala doctor as next surgeon general

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama turned to the Deep South for the next surgeon general, choosing a rural Alabama family physician who made headlines with fierce determination to rebuild her nonprofit medical clinic in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Regina Benjamin is known along Alabama's impoverished Gulf Coast as a country doctor who makes house calls and doesn't turn away patients who can't pay — even as she's had to find the money to rebuild a clinic repeatedly destroyed by hurricanes and once even fire.

I have heard of Dr. Benjamin. From what I know of her, she is a no nonsense doctor who works hard to keep people healthy regardless of money. Sounds like exactly what we need as a Surgeon General.

But someone tell her not to advocate masturbation.

I'm not sure of that former SG's name, Jocelyn Elders -- surname may be wrong I think. I was in D.C. at that time, and saw the interviews that were so perverted by later commentary. I know you're saying this tongue-in-cheek, but for the sake of clarity, because so many people actually believe that's what she said, I'll relate the case as best as I can remember.

She did not advocate masturbation. She was asked by the interviewer about sex education in schools, and she replied that it was a positive thing and best that kids receive good, reliable information. When asked about the masturbation matter, she said that this was a part of sex education, and should be acknowledged.

This is just like the whole drugs and the law thing that probably is the sensationalist, contrived crap that ultimately buried her. The reporter asked her if legalizing drugs would reduce crime. She replied that insofar as people were convicted of drug offenses, then yes, crime as presently defined would be reduced. That was it. I saw that interview as well. The reporter kept badgering her, seemingly trying to lead her to say or advocate something that she was not at all saying. She handled it well and simply reiterated her original statement, but somehow the reports of the interview were blown completely out of proportion. As a private citizen she probably would have had sound grounds for libel. As it was, she eventually resigned.

I have confidence in Sol's judgment here. He lives in the state and is better situated to be familiar with her reputation than we are.

I don't think so. The Surgeon Generals office is a public health advocacy position and can be very beneficial in leading this nations efforts in public health and health education. In fact Obama deserves kudos for naming a family practitionar to this postion. IMHO, I think she's a better pick for this public health position than a specialist like Sonjay Gupta (no disrespect intended).
 
Hell, there are all sorts of MDs who live unhealthy lives. The most liked biology professor at my college is an MD who chain smokes and is rarely seen in the hallways without a Mt. Dew or other caffeine fix in his hand, but he knows his stuff...
