By STEPHEN SINGER Corporate America typically hires lobbyists to pressure Congress on taxes and trade rules. But in an unusual - some say risky - move, five military contractors and an energy company have stepped into a fight over whether the U.S. should label Turkey's slaughter of a million Armenians nearly a century ago as genocide.
The six companies have strong ties to Turkey, a key strategic ally of the U.S. in Mideast peace efforts and the fight against terrorism. None would state their position on the House resolution, but industry analysts and others said they likely lobbied against the measure to show support for Turkey, an important market for weapons and industrial products.
"They don't want to be seen opposing a resolution that has a very evident human rights element," said Rouben Adalian, director of the Armenian National Institute, a Washington research organization. "It would put them on the side of denying history and denying genocide."
BAE Systems Inc., Goodrich Corp., Northrop Grumman Corp., Raytheon Co., United Technologies Corp. and energy producer Chevron Corp. spent $14 million to lobby Congress in the first quarter of this year. Besides the genocide resolution, the companies lobbied on Pentagon spending, climate change, taxes and more.
United Technologies, which sells Sikorsky helicopters to Turkey, says it provided information to lawmakers "that helped round out their understanding of the international trade and national security interests involved."

I am mixed on this one. What good will the genocide bill/statement make for those gone? What impact will it have on those here? Is it really our business?

I do understand why those companies are lobbying about it. Money, profit and arms sales.
Which almost makes me for it. But either way they will sell arms to Turkey I think.

Does denying the holocaust really hurt anyone, or help the victims? It has the same significance as that, whatever that is.

Are you then suggesting that Liberals should stop complaining about past discrimination and work towards ending Affirmitave Action??
I mean; does denying that it happened in the past, realy hurt anyone or help the victims??

I mean is it any of our business? Are we the morality cops of the world?

So we should ignore genocide, rape, murder, kidnapping, and other forms of abuse; as long as its outside of our borders??

Are you also advocating the disbanding of the Human Right's Organization??

Current or old events like this one the thread is about?
There is a lot of difference there.

Human rights organizations are not congress either.

Then who gets to decide what falls under "current" and what falls under an "old event"??

we acknowledged screwing over the american indians did we not and that was long before the armenian genocide

history needs to straightened out whenever possible

the turks have been trying bury this for decades

We are still screwing over the American Indians.

but respectifully the Amerinds were/are our probem and country and the Armenians are not.
I just do not see the USA needing to be the moral compas of the world esp considering our moral history in world affairs.

That didn't help to bring closure to the question.
