They spelled correctly for their time. You are being disingenuous, we covered this before.

Just like we used to spell diarrhea with the UK spelling "diarrhoea", but the accepted spelling changed. (This one happened in my lifetime.)

The men who wrote the Declaration of Independence spelled correctly using the accepted spelling of their time.

False, they spelled incorrectly, but prior to typing the spelling of most words was not standardized.

Back then spelling was an art, not a specific right and wrong. I am a bad speller, I have worked many years to get to be as good of a speller as I am.

My grandfather, who had a masters degree in civil engeenering, was a much worse speller.

My Father, who had a masters degree in Archecture, was a worse speller than I am.

Plenty of smart people are terrable spellers. Enistein was a terrable speller.


I hate that I have to go on my spelling rant every 6 months or so.

No you idiot... If an airplane begins a dive, the turn around begins well prior to when it starts to regain altitude. The rate of desent begins to slow first, then as the plane levels out the rate of desent becomes 0. Finally at the end of the dive, as the nose begins to point upward, the plane begins to assend.


We are still loosing altitude, but the rate of dissent has begun to slow, signifigantly over the past four months. Soon we will level out and begin to assend... Thus "the turn around has begun!"

Again you mislead and are disingenuous. While the standards were less, it simply means that they indeed spelled correctly for their time.

Current standards set spelling differently, which doesn't change that at the time of the writing they did indeed spell correctly according to those standards.

Just as in my 3rd grade spelling test I spelled "diarrhoea" correctly, but now it wouldn't be spelled correctly. You don't go back and regrade the test according to today's standards.
 
saying the decent has slowed would have been infinately better than gaining steam.

I can agree with you that standards were lower and thus they were correct for the time.


Standards were not lower for my grandfather. He told me just prior to his graduation he was called before the review comittee and confronted about his inability to spell. He had recieved very high marks in all of his college classes.... but they knew he could not spell.

He told them that spelling was not a spelled out requirement and that they better give him his degree... They did and he became a well respected civil engeeneer.

Its sure would have been a shame had they not passed him! The Great State of Alabama would have a few bridges that might not be standing still today had someone else designed them!


My final point is that it is ignorant to judge someones intelegence based on spelling ability!

Funny, I always thought to turn around meant to CHANGE directions. You know, go back the other way. Never knew that turning around started with hitting the brakes. Obviously your wise insight has led me to change my position. Of course we have turned around, just ignore the continued downturn... regardless of whether it takes a month or a year or two... we have turned around!

I don't care how you spell, I just don't think you should use the Declaration as an example or an excuse for it, use something that was written incorrectly as an example, not something that was spelled correctly according to archaic standards.
