I thought welfare was to give those needing it a security cushion long enough to get the training and jobs to get off public assistance and move up the social/economic ladder, which I fully support. You don't seem understand how an example is used to clarify logic errors.
Rather than understanding how the statement in the example shows that the response in no way signifies "all", you attack the example as if it is the argument.

He was a radical Republican who, at the time, were the progressives and liberals because they were for abolition.

Nope, you don't get to jump in your time machine and time-travel back 160 years to try claim credit for Lincoln.

Modern conservatives - almost to a man - defend Lincoln's arch enemy the Confederacy, they mythologize the Confederacy, they worship statues of Confederate generals, and they routinely deny that the fundamental cause of the civil war was slavery.

Simply put, the vast majority of modern conservatives are invested in defending the people who were intent on destroying Lincoln.
