I repeat myself, I do not support Hamas or violence, as long as you have known me, this has been my position. There are also Palestinian injuries, Hamas missiles aren’t accurate. I detest these attacks. It’s the innocents that always suffer.

What did we have to gain by staying? The state was skint, and we wanted to make a better society. Bevin, having forgotten that we'd destroyed the Palestinian strength, imagined the zionists would be soon begging us to come back and protect them, I think.

We'd been moving towards Commonwealth status for India for a very long time. We'd beaten Hitler and wanted to produce a decent society at last, which we did. The Mahatma was thought much more of in my family than Churchill, though Paul Robeson was more popular than either. Incidentally, we'd had Indian MPs in the UK since half a century before, so the racism was very far from the American kind. The justification for slavery was racial inferiority: for imperialism the story was that we were going to raise up everyone to our level, so continued superiority was very difficult to argue.
