MLK begged Americans to elect liberal Democrat LBJ over rightwing Republican Barry Goldwater.

MLK recognized that racial prejudice in this country was widespread and toxic

Meanwhile, Tim Scott disputed Biden that racial prejudice remains a major problem --- even though Scott confessed the next day he has been pulled over 18 times for driving while black.

The Christian Left has been at the forefront of successful social and economic justice movements for well over a century.

Democrats controlled the House, Senate, and White House. No civil rights legislation was going to pass without Democratic leadership.

Barry Goldwater, the first truly rightwing Republican to be a presidential candidate, alarmed Dr. King so much that he issued a statement begging all blacks, and whites of good conscience, to vote for the liberal LBJ and send the rightwing Goldwater down to defeat.

The Christian Left's involvement in the successful social and economic justice movements of the last 150 years is a matter of historical record.

Lyndon B. Johnson would routinely use the "N" word and called civil rights legislation "nigger" bills.

for much of his political career, Johnson opposed civil rights legislation. According to a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography on Johnson, during the two decades he served in the U.S. Senate he would use the phrase "nigger bill." Johnson also reportedly defended appointing Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court––the court's first black justice in U.S. history––by stating, "Son, when I appoint a nigger to the court, I want everyone to know he's a nigger."

Yup he was a liberal Democrat

At 9:51 on the morning of June 10, 1964, Senator Robert C. Byrd completed an address that he had begun 14 hours and 13 minutes earlier. The subject was the pending Civil Rights Act of 1964, a measure that occupied the Senate for 60 working days, including seven Saturdays. A day earlier, Senate whips Hubert Humphrey (D-MN) and Thomas Kuchel (R-CA), the bill's floor managers, concluded they had the 67 votes required at that time to end the debate.

The Civil Rights Act provided protection of voting rights; banned discrimination in public facilities—including private businesses offering public services—such as lunch counters, hotels, and theaters; and established equal employment opportunity as the law of the land.

As Senator Byrd took his seat, House members, former senators, and others—150 of them—vied for limited standing space at the back of the chamber. With all gallery seats taken, hundreds waited outside in hopelessly extended lines.

Georgia Democrat Richard Russell offered the final arguments in opposition. Minority Leader Everett Dirksen, who had enlisted the Republican votes that made cloture a realistic option, spoke for the proponents with his customary eloquence. Noting that the day marked the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's nomination to a second term, the Illinois Republican proclaimed, in the words of Victor Hugo, "Stronger than all the armies is an idea whose time has come." He continued, "The time has come for equality of opportunity in sharing in government, in education, and in employment. It will not be stayed or denied. It is here!"

Yes, Johnson was a rude, crude racists and bigot, but he was a ruthless politician and did the right thing for the nation.

Tricky Dick Nixon was notorious for using the N word.

Civil rights, Medicare, Medicaid , and various and sundry social welfare programs make LBJ a liberal, no matter how much of an asshole he was.

Assholery does nothing to change the fact LBJ took an enormous risk and placed his legacy on the line to lead in helping the nation's first comprehensive and effective civil rights legislation get passed.

The most telling fact is this: MLK begged black and white Americans to vote for LBJ and deny the conservative rightwing Goldwater the presidency.

Statement of Dr. King Repudiating Conservative Barry Goldwater and Rejecting Republican Racism

"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The "best man" at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade.

It was both unfortunate and disastrous that the Republican Party nominated Barry Goldwater as its candidate for President of the United States. In foreign policy Mr. Goldwater advocated a narrow nationalism, a crippling isolationism, and a trigger-happy attitude that could plunge the whole world into the dark abyss of annihilation. On social and economic issues, Mr. Goldwater represented an unrealistic conservatism that was totally out of touch with the realities of the twentieth century. The issue of poverty compelled the attention of all citizens of our country. Senator Goldwater had neither the concern nor the comprehension necessary to grapple with this problem of poverty in the fashion that the historical moment dictated. On the urgent issue of civil rights, Senator Goldwater represented a philosophy that was morally indefensible and socially suicidal. While not himself a racist, Mr. Goldwater articulated a philosophy which gave aid and comfort to the racist. His candidacy and philosophy would serve as an umbrella under which extremists of all stripes would stand. In the light of these facts and because of my love for America, I had no alternative but to urge every Negro and white person of goodwill to vote against Mr. Goldwater and to withdraw support from any Republican candidate that did not publicly disassociate himself from Senator Goldwater and his philosophy.

While I had followed a policy of not endorsing political candidates, I felt that the prospect of Senator Goldwater being President of the United States so threatened the health, morality, and survival of our nation, that I could not in good conscience fail to take a stand against what he represented.
