But it's not her nickname, it's her full middle name and it means "little one"...which means as an adult woman, she's calling herself "little one".

If she grew up in India, she would probably go by Nimrata because it's a common Sikh name that means "humility" and "benevolence".

Middle names are an Anglo-American conceit and many cultures do not embrace the concept of legal middle names. Legal middle names do not exist in Russia, but they do use diminutive names, aka nicknames. I am not sure what the status, if any, of legal middle names in Hindi culture is - but I am pretty sure many cultures do not embrace the American obsession with freedom to reinvent yourself and use alternative names instead of the given name one's parents chose.

Bottom line, in India she probably would keep using Nimrata. But I personally do not blame her for ditching it, given how conservatives on this very thread make it clear her name is a target for abuse and humiliation.

Another conservative who thinks those foreigners should change their name to sound more American.

As names go, Nimrata is way cooler than Linda, Sue, or Kate.

In my book, immigrants should feel perfectly comfortable keeping their ethnic names without feeling any pressure from Republicans to get more "Americanized" names.

This thread has actually gone a long way towards demonstrating rightwing xenophobia and anti-immigrant prejudice.

Of course. That's my point. America is a racist nation and this proves it. If American society commands these people to Anglicize their names, then that's proof of the racist society that commands those accommodations and changes.
