The definition of a word can be anything you want it to be. The problem is to get everyone else to go along with it. And the constitution defines what the gov't can and cannot do. Not the history of the word.

No. words don't mean anything you want.

Why do you assert that it's governments duty to define marriage if it's not in the constitution that that is their duty?

that is 100% wrong. you must necessarily establish what the word meant when the statute or constitution was written. for example, if the framers guaranteed "the right to be gay"....it would be false to say the framers guaranteed "gay" rights, as in homosexual rights.

The gov't gives rights to married people. They give marriages licences.

The gov't gives tax breaks, the right to make medical decisions if the spouse is unable, assumed inheritance, freedom from being forced to testify against their spouse, and some other things I have forgotten. And they give those things based on a licence that given to people based only on their being of opposite sex, unrelated, and not currently married to someone else. What high standards for a licence.

Again, the government can only take rights away. If you can't understand that basic concept we can't discuss this further.

The gov't decides who gets what tax breaks. The gov't decides or determines who gets to make medical decisions for a person when they are unable. The gov't runs the courts and decides who is exempt from testifying.

The gov't issues the marriage licences.

None of this is up for a popular vote. These have been determined by elected officials or gov't bureaucrats.

Whatever basic concept you want to call that, the gov't gives benefits to certain people based on their marital status.

A simple power-of-attorney and filing head of household will give a gay couple the same benefits.
