Why we need the Draft Back!

So, did he wait at home like all others who were told to wait for their number (thus never really volunteered) or did he hide away at home like a whiny little chicken shit, hoping not to get called?

You were WRONG and attacking my deceased father who gave his life in defense of our country will not change that.

Eat shit and die scumbag.

Are you saying that Rangel is a hypocrite?

No, I'm saying he is a politician .. and unbeknownst to people who know nothing about politics, politicians often engage in acts of political statement and/or introducing or supporting legislation they don't believe in to make a point or to put the opposition in a awkward position.

The fact is everyone knew instituting a draft would mean the end of the Iraq War.

The politics of this should be clear even to 8th graders.

If this is a "fact", then why don't the Democrats institute it now? Didn't Obama promise to end the war?

A. Democrats are cowards.

B. Obama promised to end the Iraq War. For all intents and purposes, it's over.

C. Obama is a centrist, thus he doesn't have the political courage to do the right thing, only the winning thing.

D. Democrats are now in the position of having to defend escalation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Soon they may be in the position of having to defend all-out failed war in that region.

In other words, it's just American politics at work.

Wasn't it essentially over during the Presidential (general election) campaign? Wouldn't this make Obama a hypocrite also?

It all depends on what you consider "over" .. akin to what some considered "accomplished."

The ugly truth is the Iraq War is not over .. and yes, Obama could be called a hypocrite not only on Iraq, but also on unnecessary war.

Yes Obama is a hypocrite. Aren't virtually all politicians?
Some are much worse than others though.

Senator Craig comes to mind.

So is it essentially over or not? Make up you mind.

Most are .. as well as actors, liars, and clowns. But that's what Americans elect and it's what you get when you're trapped in a two-party quagmire.

Yes the sytem we have is hosed badly. Sadly no relief is expected in the near future.
We will probably have to fall apart first and then come back up to second world status with another better system in place.

I knew the nuances would be over your head my brother.

For all intents and purposes the Iraq War is over, but it ain't over because we're still sending troops there. My daughter will be going back in November.

There is nothing left to accomplish in Iraq .. in truth, there never was. But we are still stuck there because we don't know how to get out without it looking like what it is .. another Saigon Moment.

Unfortunately, I believe you are correct.

The problem with America was not George Bush. The problem with America is Americans.

Isn't "essentially" the same as "all intents and purposes"? Are WW2 and the Korean War not over because we're still in Japan, Germany and Korea?

Face facts 'mu bruthu', the US of A will have troops in Iraq for a long, long time, on a permanent base. That's been a goal all along and its a good thing, too.

... wow

Are US troops dying in Germany, Japan, or North Korea? Is WWII still going on?

American troops will not have a perment presence in Iraq .. so sayeth the Iraqi people.

Cum laude my ass .. you are dumb.

That was a question for you, Einstein.

And yes, I believe that the US should have a "perment" [sic] presence in Iraq.

Oh, the delicious irony, you the champion speller calling me "dumb".

I am ashamed to admit I have been living my life in ignorance of the WWII draft. When I was heading out for my last tour in Vietnam, I mentioned to my grandfather that half my platoon were draftees. He went into a long diatribe about how they didn't need a draft to serve in WWII, that they had to put in selective service to handle all the volunteers, and how they had a year and a half worth of volunteers to cram the training facilities on the first day after Pearl, and how the kids of today (being 1971 at the time) were too damned spoiled to understand honor and service, and if they weren't so spoiled they wouldn't need a draft.

We talked about it for literally hours. Being it was an important day in my life, I have never forgotten what was said. Being it was the last time I saw my grandfather also made it memorable. And I took him at his word, and did not question it until this thread forced me to look at reality.

I apologize for my ignorance.

But I still oppose a draft. And I will always oppose a draft.
