Majority Of Americans Want Pot Legalized: Zogby Poll

A majority of Americans, in a poll released Wednesday, say it "makes sense to tax and regulate" marijuana. The Zogby poll, commissioned by the conservative-leaning O'Leary Report, surveyed 3,937 voters and found 52 percent in favor of legalization. Only 37 percent opposed.

A previous ABC News/Washington Post poll found 46 percent in support. In California, a Field Poll found 56 percent backing legalization.

Responding to the poll at a press conference Tuesday, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called for an open debate on legalization.

Voters were asked: "Scarce law enforcement and prison resources, a desire to neutralize drug cartels and the need for new sources of revenue have resurrected the topic of legalizing marijuana. Proponents say it makes sense to tax and regulate the drug while opponents say that legalization would lead marijuana users to use other illegal drugs. Would you favor or oppose the government's effort to legalize marijuana?"

That was 2005. This is a meteoric rise in support. Pretty soon you'll have to look under rocks to find people opposed.

The idea that prohibition will work "THIS TIME" even though it caused gangs and violence in the past has got to be one of the largest mass hallucinations and stupidities that have ever existed.

Regulate and tax drugs don't attempt the idiotic "war" on drugs. Drugs aren't even fighting back and they won before that "war" started.

Just another indication of the backward moral direction this country is taking. :(

Not really, leaning. Each of us still has the right not to participate, not to undertake smoking the stuff. I never have and won't start if it becomes legal.

I think that we have to be careful how accepting we are of its pharmacologic influence under conditions where it might affect other people, such as in driving. People have to understand that just because it's legal doesn't mean that it is safe or desirable under all circumstances and that there are responsibilities associated with its use, just as with alcohol, painkillers, or anything else that can affect our performance or judgment.

Marijuana use is already widespread despite its illegality, and enforcing those laws is unduly expensive and the penalties are disproportionate to the "crime".

We all still have the option to behave personally according to our own moral and health-conscious criteria; legalizing pot won't change that.

But don't you think that the fact that the majority now think it is OK to alter the mind is an indication of the moral direction of this nation? I know we have the personal option to behave as we will but this trend (and others as well) is very disturbing to me.

Alcohol is legal, but I have never drank it. When marajuana becomes legal, I still won't partake. But I am now in the minority when it comes to drugs like marajuana and eventually will be in the case of other, harder drugs as well. "Hell in a handbasket" is a phrase that comes to mind for me when I see results like this.

Gloom and doom
The world is coming to an end

"Altering the mind" is a subjective term. Anything that changes your body chemistry could be said to "alter the mind". Sex? HORRIBLE BECAUSE IT ALTERS THE MIND! Exercise?! HORRIBLE BECAUSE IT ALTERS THE MIND! It is a completely silly and arbitrary moral distinction which the prohibitionists invented out of thin air.

I think it is an indication that the majority have come to the realization that people shooting each other in the street to protect their drug territory isn't more moral than taxing the crap out of it and regulating its creation. Just as they came to the same realization long ago when prohibition was first tried.

It isn't more moral to incite violence and ensure only the immoral are the only suppliers available. This makes it simple for children to get cocaine, meth, MJ, etc while relatively tough to get Beer. I prefer all of them to be at least as tough to get as beer, tougher hopefully for many.

But Water, I can drive after sex (probably not too well during :)) and I can drive after exercise. And the kind of alteration we are talking about here is vastly different, IMO.

Not to mention the moral issues involved with incarceration for minor drug offenses.
