George Will On California

Seriously.

You can't take a quarter of bad luck and ascribe to it the downfall of an entire ideology. California has been left of this nation for as long as this nation's been here. This is the probably the only year in which it has had a net population migration.

A big reason a lot of the iniatives go to the ballot is because of the legislature's failure to step up and do their job. 'Tough decisions? Let's leave it up to the voters' seems to be legislature's attitude.

That may very well be the case. My point is simply that George Fucking Will's column is nonsense on stilts.

cali real estate looks like it could be an awesome investment soon.....but only if they can do something about the tax crap they have.

Like Prop 13 which limits property taxes to 1%? California has higher than average tax receipts per person for a state, but it is nowhere near the first on the list. And "tax reciepts per a person" doesn't get rid of the confounding variable of relative wealth, as California's policies have made the average Californian way richer than the average Texan and this throws the statistic off.

You guys are really doing yourself a disservice. California has had growing population for almost every year of existence. So you are, apparently, stating that a liberal state can only count on population growth for 149 out of every 150 years or so - oh teh horrors.

spread these rumors, drive that avg home price down another 30% and I'm in.

since getting laid off I joined this small partnership and we are targeting foreclosed properties in the bay area. We actually had two offers accepted yesterday by the bank and now have three properties under contract in the East Bay. Point being there better not be another 30% drop.

The point you miss WM is that a large number of the people leaving the state were one's that were more heavily contributing the state tax base and while a larger number of the people coming are more reliant on the state's services. So net numbers may look like a wash but in reality its having a large effect on how the state operates.

i wasn't referring to property taxes alone. It's the totality of the cost of living in Cali, via taxes, that is part of the problem now.

how did they manage that? could it be consistently spending more than they were bringing in and using BS financing to work around their budget amendment?

Bullshit, sorry yes good earners are leaving. Your not telling me the richest are leave. Please, that'd be funny

BS financing around a budget that couldn't be fixed?

Again, it's California voters. They don't want borrowing, spending cuts, or taxes. They want it to appear out of thin air.

There's always going to be rich here Top. That's not going to change. We are not going to see a mass exodus of people out of Beverly Hills.

What I said about the migration of who is generally leaving and who is generally coming isn't bullshit.

dude I'm with you but we/I need even more cons to move. You guys have too many people anyways and are way ahead of the rest of the country. A nice little 5 yr mini depression (even if caused by liberal spending) would do me just fine.
