Texans push for constitutional carry

An interesting consequence. And one that isn't foreseeable. :)

Is there data on who benefits the most from such laws? Overall.

Term limit laws? Probably, but I don't remember any. Probably the campaign industry because fewer incumbents means more candidates. And, interest groups because they are called upon to help legislators understand and write legislation; especially if they have smaller professional staff.

Dude, I'm just a worker bee. I know there are limits on law. I know the point of our Constitution is to preserve the rights of all Americans.

What am I missing when people seek to deprive others of their rights?

What are you referring to?

You and I both know that people have rights. There's a line where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

This discussion is to define the limits of that line. Where do you draw that line? My line is in support of the individual to defend themselves.

There are other lines too. How much power do you think the Federal government should have?

didn't you discount one of those ideals in the declaration of independence about abolishing tyranny and raising a new government to protect rights????

No. Why would I do that? You the one advocating turning over the table in a fit of anger.

OK. I thought you were still talking about comparative state politics. We have to distinguish between rights and freedoms. Rights are what the government cannot restrict but they are not absolute (speech, religion). Freedoms are things that we are free to do until government chooses to restrict them if they have the power to do so--outlawing smoking in public buildings, drugs, abortion....

I would generally say a person should be free to do anything that does not harm others, but when government is expected to pay for the mistakes of others, maybe those should be restricted. For example, if I have the freedom not to wear a seat belt but if I am seriously injured and the government has to take care of my medical expenses the rest of my life, that person's freedom is less important than the burden to the taxpayers.

I am not sure I can come up with a line---I have to evaluate each individually although I generally favor the most individual freedom (as long as it does not come at the expense of others).
