Steve Schmidt, McCain Campaign Manager: Religion Could Kill The GOP

Speaking publicly for one of the first times since the end of the presidential campaign, John McCain's campaign manager Steve Schmidt painted a dire portrait of the state of the Republican Party, arguing that the GOP has largely been co-opted by its religious elements.

"If you put public policy issues to a religious test, you risk becoming a religious party," Schmidt declared. "And in a free country, a political party cannot be viable in the long term if it is seen as a sectarian party."

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the Republican party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."
Barry Goldwater (R) – Late Senator & Father of the Conservative movement

as if the liberals are all about compromise. it is all or nothing with them as well. the religious right grew in power as a direct reaction to the left's anti religious stance. consider the country's political history, it has mostly been governed by religious values. right or wrong, that is just reality. the left wants to abolish all things religious in government and you can't do that. everytime the left tries that, you see a religious surge on the right in america.

be careful what you ask for.

Steve Schmitt is talking about the Republican Party...

If you study the rise of evangelicals in the Republican Party, it can be traced to 1980 and Reagan.

If you study what spurned the political activism of the Evangelical Right, it began in the 70's when the IRS went after Robert Jones University for their racially discriminatory policies.

IMO, these "christians" don't deserve the capital C... they're bigots, racists, theocrats and dominionists...

"The clergy, by getting themselves established by law and ingrafted into the machine of government, have been a very formidable engine against the civil and religious rights of man."

Thomas Jefferson to Jeremiah Moor, 1800.

you lost all cred when you called them bigots, racists....you do realize your thread is NOT about this one group, but about all christians....lame

Now replace "liberal" with Christian and see that you do the same to us.

We are not your enemy, even though Falwell, along with Reagan started the trend and others have carried the torch for many years! too many years.

It is also the time that the "pray, pay and obey" model came out of the churches and became the creed of the USA government. We the people needed to be convinced that it was America's job to protect her assets even if they did not belong to us, not to question our government because everything they did for us was honest and true and what we did in the past was not. The "secular" government had become corrupt, un-Constitutional and immoral and it was all due to the liberal ideas creeping into our learning institutions. Free thought is dangerous for a government that is trying to build an empire, oh, I mean cover our assets. Science was out, and the Christian god was trying to force his way into the classroom via those poor persecuted Christians. The Moral Majority brought back the fever of fundamentalism and the belief that the USA was a Christian nation and they had been robbed by the liberals and everything now had to be turned around and made right.

We are the new Satans, so I will play my part and tell you to get off the cross, someone else needs the wood; and I am so tired of the persecuted Christian which is mostly non existent in the USA. You think we have lost credibility, well, the Iran Contra really did happen and Ronnie wasn't Super Man.

Liberals turned certain portions of this country a long time ago and we shouldn't have done that, we under-estimated them and now we have paid.

The article is about the Republican Party AND that the GOP has largely been co-opted by its religious elements.

READ the article...

BTW, the Moral Majority is nothing NEW

"If we are going to save America and evangelize the world, we cannot accommodate secular philosophies that are diametrically opposed to Christian truth ... We need to pull out all the stops to recruit and train 25 million Americans to become informed pro-moral activists whose voices can be heard in the halls of Congress."

"I am convinced that America can be turned around if we will all get serious about the Master's business. It may be late, but it is never too late to do what is right. We need an old-fashioned, God-honoring, Christ-exalting revival to turn American back to God. America can be saved!"

Jerry Falwell
"Moral Majority Report" for September, 1984

"The national government will maintain and defend the foundations on which the power of our nation rests. It will offer strong protection to Christianity as the very basis of our collective morality."

"Today Christians stand at the head of our country. I pledge that I will never tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity... We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit.... We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theatre, and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past few years."

Adolf Hitler
The Speeches of Adolph Hitler, 1922-1939, Vol. 1 (London, Oxford University Press, 1942), pg. 871-872.

The Religious Right is a misnomer hysteria that non believing and/or moderate republicans have bought into...

In other words they have been tooled by the left in order to divide the party.

Certainly the relgious folks have become more vocal over the years the more that they saw the family and life of the unborn under attack. However, their involvement and numbers have remained constant and basically unchanged (with reagrds to percentages of voters), though their views have become more vocal. The vocal movemnet began when Dr. Dobson served on the task force under Jimmy Carter which summarized the White House Conference on Families. See, when a Democrat involves christianity it's OK.

Nothing wrong with religious folks being vocal, unfortunately it's the religious extremist lunatics and outright idiots that seem to be doing the most talking. Here's a hint if religious conservatives want to have any credibility with the anyone, stop talking about adopting the tactics of left (legislating morality) and instead let the power of persuasion convince people that your way of life is superior to the alternatives.

I'd agree nothing wrong with religious speaking their minds. Have a problem when those speaking their minds are saying they are speaking for me or others.

Don't be silly Annie, the extreme religious right doesn't claim to speak for you, they speak for GOD, 'member ? :D

that was fairly random...... but ok, whatever tickles your toes.

The God I believe in has far more important things to do than to run around "blessing" stuff, but I'll pass your message along the next time I talk to it ..

Very weak response to a less than strong post. You lose.

Poor, oppressed, Christians.

*Pauses to wipe tear from eyes*

How terrible it is, the way our SECULAR SATANIC society FORCES you to SUFFER and PUSHES SATANISM on YOU! Next thing you know, they'll be throwing Christians to the lions like in Rome! It's just around the corner!
