The number of college degrees means little. How many of those degrees were from quality institutions and how many of those degrees were in rigorous and marketable fields of study?

What I want to know is how comes students in other countries can attend college, obtain a quality education at schools that have a fraction of the resources most US Universities have and at a fraction of the cost.

In OECD countries about a third have no cost for tuition. In the OECD countries that do charge tuition the average is about $16,000 to obtain a bachelors. The US and the UK are outliers in that the cost is double that of the average OECD nation at $32,000.

It was like that not THAT long ago..too.

A number of years to be certain...but damn! College was pretty much the same for 100s of years.

Then there was a relatively rapid shift to a different objective.

True that. Much of my education has no real market value but a lot of my education helped develop me as a more rounded person and has benefited my life in ways that you just can't put a price tag on.

Though I do understand why those who don't have a college education are resentful towards some who are arrogant about their education and behave as if that makes them a better person than they are. I agree with them. They are right to be resentful towards such snobs.

There's truth to that. In my grandfathers day when he was in school a high school education placed you in the top 25% of the population in education and only 5% of the nation had a college education.

In my day a college education placed you in the top 25% of the population education wise and a graduate education placed you in the top 5%. Now it only places you in the top 40% and a graduate education places you only in the top 13%.

I doubt that. I think that it's closer to the truth that a college education is far more available and attainable than in the past. In my fathers day if you didn't have the GI Bill or your parents didn't have the money or you weren't one of the lucky few to earn a scholarship then you simply didn't go to college.

So yea now you may have to go into a lot of debt to get a college education but the loans are available where back in my fathers day student loans for college didn't exist.

Those are exceptions but the averages show that unless the college grads are in the super high fields doctors, lawyers, computer science the difference in earnings isn't all that much.
