Trump Pressures Pence to Reject Electoral Votes

President Trump on Tuesday escalated his efforts to force Vice President Mike Pence to overturn President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory, falsely asserting that Mr. Pence had the power to unilaterally throw out electoral votes on Wednesday when Congress meets to certify the election results.

But there is nothing in the Constitution or the law that explicitly gives a vice president that power, and aides close to Mr. Pence, who concede that he is facing a politically perilous moment, are convinced he will follow the normal procedures and confirm Mr. Biden’s election.

Trump is a criminal. I hope he rots in prison.

It has basically come down to that. After all of the "1 vote per state in the House" stuff and other musings, the right realizes that they can't get a vote to uphold objection in the House, and even w/ a majority in the Senate, can't get it there, either.

So, they now like to think that Pence can reject electoral votes. As though our founders, who were incredibly wary about giving any one man too much power, would grant the VP that kind of power in a ceremonial role.

Seems like Trump can be prosecuted for treason.

:rofl2:

Pence has a basic, if unappealing, job: Count the votes.

Three weeks ago, the Electoral College formally cast its votes for president, affirming Mr. Biden’s victory. But under the Constitution, there is one more step before the result is final: the certification by Congress of the electoral votes, to be conducted by the president of the Senate. That’s the vice president.

“The president of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates, and the votes shall then be counted,” according to the 12th Amendment

New Trump supporter logic: Hey, it doesn't say he CAN'T overturn an election....

Pence's one and only Constitutional mandate is to supervise a "count" of the electoral votes, all of which have been certified. This is incidental to the authority to conduct national elections vested in the states, a deliberate separation of governmental powers. Trump of course wouldn't be expected to know that, but Pence is, at least by now if he didn't before.

Pence has no such powers. If he decides not to show up, the president pro tem of the house it. It is not a powerful job. Trump has real experts on governance available, but he only believes right-wing conspiracy sites. He should join this board.

Loyal soldier Pence torn between Trump, Constitution

WASHINGTON (AP) — He has been President Donald Trump’s most loyal soldier, dutifully backing the unpredictable leader and largely avoiding his ire.

Now Vice President Mike Pence finds himself in the most precarious position of his tenure as he prepares to preside over Wednesday’s congressional tally of Electoral College votes, the last front in Trump’s futile attempts to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the November election.

Not even close. Before you said you were using the dictionary definition of treason. When you want to prosecute you get into federal law and the Constitution. He did not wage war against the U. S. or give aid and comfort to the enemy and we are not in a war.

You need to look at other possible crimes.

He said in his speech he wouldn't like Pence as much if he didn't help him out.
