Given that trump has just vetoed pay to the troops, he will need mercenaries to fight a war in the streets. But I doubt there are enough mercenaries in the world to fight the US Army.

I do my best. The good news is that I'm not a suicidal ex-short order cook bending the knee for Trump.
What past dictators have promised is after they gain control, they will pay the mercenaries. So trump would hope that he could use the mercenaries to gain absolute control, and then without the need for Congressional approval, could pay the mercenaries with our taxes.
The problem with that is no mercenary would ever believe trump could win.
The bad news is that you are either a liar or out of the loop.

The NRA didn't persuade me to buy my guns and thousands of rounds of ammo; Obama did. Jus' sayin' because it's true.
After Obama tried to jam his 2013 gun ban down the throats of Americans, I joined the NRA with a 5 year membership. A couple years later the NRA offered a package deal and I added another two years of membership. TBH, the NRA is far too political and corrupt for my tastes, but they are the strongest defense against Democrat overreach and the Democrats fetish about banning guns.
Dems are for high pay for the troops, Republicans are for higher pay to beltway bandits hawking weapons systems to Congress. Everyone knows this.

The fun part for me was always the fact they had to make up a term "assault weapons" to ban scary-looking guns.
