Genes are important, no doubt there. But take a smart kid and put him in a dumb family then you will more than likely end up with a dumb kid. And vice-versa.

That's my understanding as well. We have a word in Hawaiian -- haole -- that translates to foreigner. It can be a pejorative term to describe (usually) white tourists from the mainland, but it can also be used in a neutral sense to describe anyone who is not an islander.
