The Daily Shill

Translation:

Republicans block legislation using filibuster = republicans fault.

Democrats block legislation using filibuster = republicans fault.

Seriously. The inane "they controlled everything" rubbish is just that. So long as the majority isn't filibuster-proof there is no way any party can control everything.

LOL. I was basically pointing out the D double standard. But heck, if you want to believe I am trying to defend Ds then you have all that power to pretend.

People back Obama in those numbers out of desperation. They know that if Obama fails, the republicans will get another shot at it and that is something that terrifies the liberals.

these are theories, not precedent. It could just as easily be determined that FDRs socialist policies actually prolonged the depression.

Oh please. People back Obama because he's articulate, intelligent, expresses a vision clearly, that and Republicans have proven so utterly incompetent and such royal fuck ups and have been wrong on virtually every major issue that unless your a right wing fanatic Republicans have virtually no credability with the American public.

I bet people like myself and Topper have voted for many more Republicans over the years but right now were voting Democrat by default. At the present you have the Democrats, who are the liberal party and the Republicans, who want to be the conservative party, but in fact have become the inept fuck up party of right wing extremist. Who needs them? The could fuck up a wet dream. It's time for Republicans to get their shit together or get replaced by another party.

You Republicans think 2008 was an electoral blood bath....wait till 2010 cause the vast majority of the American public blames the Republicans for our current messes.

But it wasn't filibustered. That's where your whole theory falls apart. It was never brought to the floor. There is plenty of blame to spread around, but pretending that it is all the Democrats' fault when the Republicans sat on their hands is laughable.

We've been through all of this before, Damo.

Again, if the whip knows that they cannot get past the filibuster barrier, then they drop the play.

As well, I wish they had driven it harder, but there was only one party that made the point at all rather than told us again and again how healthy they were.

Whether you like bravo, he put forward actual evidence and so far all you have was, "They didn't try very hard."

It's weak, and it directly contradicts available evidence.

But there is no evidence that the Republicans actually tried to pass this bill. At all. Pretending that they didn't try to pass because of the filibuster is silly. They tried to pass plenty of other stuff that was filibustered yet this didn't make the cut. Why? Because they didn't give a shit and the Republicans in the Senate were aggressively lobbied by Fannie and Freddie to kill the bill. It worked.

And keep in mind that this same (or very similar bill) passed the House with a majority of Democrats voting in favor of it so it isn't as though there were no Democrats that would possibly vote for the bill if it came up for a vote.

Finally, Barney Frank introduced a similar bill in 2007 that passed the House.

I've presented all of this evidence to you previously (including the fact that the very first Senate bill was sponsored by a Democrat, not McCain and the other Republicans) but you just ignoring it while accepting at face value the ridiculous claim that the Republicans sat on the bill because they didn't have the stones for a fight over it. It's a joke.

It was never successfully reported to the floor because dems made it clear it would BE filibustered. With several war funding bills being blocked and stalled as well as other congressional business this was a fight that had been on going since 2001! Here's the real news about this...Republicans were concerned demanding hearings and committees to try and do something and democrats were refusing, yes REFUSING to take action!

The bill was reported out of committee. Frist just let it sit and did nothing. Hearings were held. Committee votes were taken. The bill was reported to the full Senate. Frist did nothing.

The Democrats couldn't refuse to take action since they weren't in a position to do anything about it. Only Bill Frist could. He declined.

I'd also note that the bill passed the House with the vast majority of Democrats voting in favor.

A bill was finally, successfuly, reported, and the threat of fillibuster hung over it like stink on shit. As you well know the dems had been blocking and stalling numerous bills. Taking actions on bills that had a chance of success is where time and energy was spent...again, the only ones taking action to reform were Republican's and the White House, democrats only purposed to attack and threaten.

The threat of a filibuster? That never stopped the Republicans before when it comes to things they really really care about, like the nomination of John Bolton or "tort reform" or interstate abortion laws or repealing the estate tax or dumbass "marriage protection" bills. This is the type of thing the Republicans forced a vote on in the face of a filibuster at the time but not the reforms to the GSEs that the Republicans knew would lead to global economic collapse if it wasn't passed.

Pretending that it is all the Democrats' fault is hilarious. So much for personal responsibility.

The really sad part is even if they had reregulated fanny adn freddy that would have done nothing about the massive writing of sub primes at the time. Freddy and fanny were just a fraction of the problem.

The idiots are believing their own propaganda when they say freddy and fanny made this mess.

As I said, all you have is "They didn't try hard enough."

While your guys, didn't try at all.

FM & FM were the insurance for most of those loans, this would have gone a much longer way to staving off the problem than you realize.

The dismissive nature of this trends in the same direction as the apologists for idiots like Franks who blocked this at every opportunity. Shoot they held hearings with just Ds telling everybody how great the fricking companies were while others tried to tell them this was a toilet just waiting for an ass. If you watch long enough you would suspect they were going to open a church and start taking collection with the praise they heaped on these behemoths.

Sure it has! The entire Bush presidency was full of fillibuster threats by Dems! Numerous bills that are reported never make it to the floor for a myriad of reasons some of which are; threat of fillibuster, amendments that ruin or pull the teeth from a bill, time constraints, etc. Once a session is over the bills are wiped from the books and have to start the proccess over again. S190 was specifically threatened.

"It was never allowed to be brought to the floor for a vote because Schumer and Dodd, primarily, are on record as having said Fannie and Freddie are just fine. Since I am going by the clips of the floor comments and articles that were written at the time quoting the Republican's begging Dodd to allow it on the floor for a vote, I presume there was a filibuster by the Dems. It came up again in late 2006, but at that point the Dems were set to be in control of both Houses of Congress."

I'm not going to watch the video. I'll assume for the sake of argument that it is video clips of Democrats saying that Fannie and Freddie are fine. What that ignores is that the only time the bill was actually put up for a vote, it got the support of the vast majority of Democrats and passed the House very easily.

And Schumer and Dodd can say whatever they want. They were members of the minority party with zero power to dictate what bills went to the floor. There were numerous bills that went up for a vote that were successfully filibustered. This wasn't one of them. It didn't come up for a vote because Frist never brought it up when he had the chance. He did bring up plenty of other stuff though in the face of a filibuster, including the estate tax repeal (twice), the Bolton nomination (twice), two separate tort reform bills, a bill concerning interstate abortion and several immigration bills.

Finally, as for Damo's comment that the Democrats didn't do anything, once the Democrats took control of the House Barney Frank introduced a very similar bill to the other that passed previously that numerous Republicans co-sponsored. It passed the House. Every Democrat voted for it. 104 Republicans voted against it. Only 90 Republicans voted for it.

I guess we can blame the Democrats for not doing anything with that bill in 2007 and on, just like we can blame the Republicans for sitting on their hands from 2003-2006.

WHOA! Not so easy. You attempt to dismiss the threat of a fillibuster as a non starter? The fact of the matter is that dems stalled any kind of reform that could have made a real difference. The house bill HR 1427 was sponsored by Frank, but he voted against it on the floor because of restrictions added to it. In July 08 he was promoting Fannie and Freddie as sound, though he himself knew they were in trouble.

1) The threat of a filibuster is a non-starter. If the Republicans really wanted to pass it they would have tried like they did with many many other bills that they felt were important. Like tort reform, repealing the estate tax and "protecting marriage."

2) Frank, along with every other House Democrat, voted in favor of H.R. 1427. A majority of Republicans voted against it.

Yeah...heres the analogy...

The Dims play with matches in every room of a house over a long period of time while Repubs warn them about the fire hazard they are creating....as expected, the house ignites.... and as the house begins to burn and fall, one of the Dims decides to piss in a window to fight the fire and is hailed as a hero....

HR 1427 .....2007 ? A little late to START regulation and oversite.....
The first warnings came from Bush in 2001
