Praise God, who has many names.

Presumably the God believed in by 80% of Americans... Yahweh/Jesus Christ.

Ah, Jehovah, or Yahweh, depending on who you are speaking to. He does have a name, Christians just don't use it. They use the generic god.

No Dixie, long, long before we had paternilistic religions the Earth Goddess was worshiped by nearly all and predates the monotheistic God by millenia.

It is a shame. I truly believe that we should have a class about who invented gods first. It was the wind, the rain, volcanoes who were the gods, until man learned he could control with religion. Then the gods became considerably more human in their traits! Imagine that gods created in the image of man.
Giving him all his nasty traits like jealousy.

What is interesting is that in very ancient times more protoreligions held to an earth goddess image of "God"

Absolutely, women brought life and they weren't sure just how. They didn't associate intercourse with baby making at first, eventually someone put the two things together!

To quote a bumper sticker aimed at annoying christians....

"My Goddess gave birth to your God"

You said it was to annoy the Christians, I just followed it to its conclusion.

Most christians believe Jesus was part of God, but not necessarily God.

If there was not God prior to Jesus, there was a lot of sacrificing and nonsense for no reason.
