People fear what they don't understand. Many people are confused about their own religious beliefs! Just as the Constitution is a little hard to interpret sometimes, so much could be said about the Holy Bible.

Re taxes, that's a matter of education along with maturity.
Agreed about fear. The greatest human fear of all is fear of the unknown. Obviously if a person or group of people don't understand something, most would fear it. It's a common human reaction.
The solution, IMO, is education. Especially in critical thinking skills: Don't tell them what to think. Teach them how to think then let them figure it out on their own.
