Greenspan puts down the Ayn Rand novel

Green span has stepped away from the tennet of Rands ideas of libertarianism.

The corporate heads do not automatically self regulate to effect the greater good.

Why anyone would believe that for even one second is beyond me?

Must... HAVE...

...
CONTROL!!!

Socialism works in Sweden, capitalism fails in America.

Sweden "works" because it is not a socialist nation. They are a capitalist nation with an extensive welfare and entitlement system, but even they have cut back on their social welfare in the past few decades in response to economic stagnation.

The fact is, everyone doing everything to their selifish interest leads to even more totalitarianism than Hitler, as people become little more than products.

Hitler was a socialist.

Originally the National Socialist German Worker's Party (official name) was an attempt to unite Socialist economic ideas with Nationalism (Socialism advocates internationalism).

When Hitler joined the party the people who advocated socialist ideas already were a minority to those who advocated nationalism under all circumstances. Historians usually call the "night of the long knives" the final extermination of the National Socialist wing of the party, as Röhm was the last one in the party leadership to have socialist ideas.

The very only socialist action of Hitler was the introduction of 1st May as Labor day holiday, which usually is celebrated by socialists in Europe as "their" holiday. Hitler of course saw it as just another chance to let uniformed people goose-step thru the streets.

To call Hitler a socialist is as absurd as calling Stalin a Christian, just because Orthodoxy was state religion in Russia when he was born.

Myth: Hitler was a leftist.

Fact: Nearly all of Hitler's beliefs placed him on the far right.

Summary

Many conservatives accuse Hitler of being a leftist, on the grounds that his party was named "National Socialist." But socialism requires worker ownership and control of the means of production. In Nazi Germany, private capitalist individuals owned the means of production, and they in turn were frequently controlled by the Nazi party and state. True socialism does not advocate such economic dictatorship -- it can only be democratic. Hitler's other political beliefs place him almost always on the far right. He advocated racism over racial tolerance, eugenics over freedom of reproduction, merit over equality, competition over cooperation, power politics and militarism over pacifism, dictatorship over democracy, capitalism over Marxism, realism over idealism, nationalism over internationalism, exclusiveness over inclusiveness, common sense over theory or science, pragmatism over principle, and even held friendly relations with the Church, even though he was an atheist.

Hitler was a socialist.

Hitler was a totalitarian and a fascist. He used elements of socialism but lots of governments do, as does our. Hitler was no more a socialist than FDR was.

Rand wasn't a libertarian. She was an objectivist.

Ayn Rand presented a series of superhuman characters who never had to worry about troubles that happen in real life, or poverty (they were always magically able to raise as much money as they wanted), and pitted them against stupid strawmen. Reading the Fountainhead is like getting shot in the head.

No, you've got that completely wrong. Rand's characters were human characters who superceeded and conquered real life problems and who produced prosperity and carried us on their shoulders in the process.

I have read some rand and was very underwhelmed.
I have read both Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. As a work of literature I agree she's underwhelming. She belabors a point to death over and over again (The horse is dead! Get off it.) and her character development is pathetic as they are all two dimensional characters and her plots are overly simplistic bordering on utopian.

But she also outlines an important and influential philosophical concept about how our shared success depends on ability, productivity and the concept that the products of our minds are our personal property and that you have no claim on my productive abilities based upon your needs. Rand's "Objectivism" is probably the most significant philosophies developed during the 20th century.

This is a very good description of her novels. Like you I also found the character development and dialogue limited, I would go further and say limited to 3 different types of people. They are novels but really just platforms for her gems of philosophical thought.

Watermark is smart but way too intellectually lazy and manic to read anything longer than an article.
Rand deals with poverty, and makes many great observations on the mannerisms of those in it.

Like when the main character in The Fountainhead

SPOILER below

blows up a lower-income apartment complex because they put balconies on his design. Makes tons of sense.

Huppi fails. Socialism is when the state controls the means of production.
