ND measure says fertilized egg has human rights

By DALE WETZEL
Associated Press Writer

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- A measure approved by the North Dakota House gives a fertilized human egg the legal rights of a human being, a step that would essentially ban abortion in the state.

The bill is a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that extended abortion rights nationwide, supporters of the legislation said.

Representatives voted 51-41 to approve the measure Tuesday. It now moves to the North Dakota Senate for its review.

The bill declares that "any organism with the genome of homo sapiens" is a person protected by rights granted by the North Dakota Constitution and state laws.

So if this passes and a pregger woman drinks alcohol she can be charged with giving alcholic beverages to a minor?

Probably.

I wonder if this will make it so they'll have to try to save the life of the embryo instead of trying to kill it when removing it from the woman.

There are already laws that cover this. If her drinking harms the child she can be held liable in criminal courts.

I think it is obvious.

Anyone who has been on this site should know that Damo has advocated trying to advance technology so the child could live outside the mothers womb, creating a pseudo-womb, if you will. This has been his stance on abortion for quite some time.

These are the sort of far-sighted lawmakers the rest of the world can only dream of.

I hope they are going to extend the rights to cover all fertilized eggs - chicken eggs, duck eggs, caviar, that type of thing.

A waiting womb?

I generally do not follow the abortion threads. I'd rather bang my head against a wall. The only time I pay attention is when states do silly stuff like this.

While I can appreciate Damo's stance, isn't hat kind of a cop out? I mean, in a perfect world where anything is possible that would be great. But that's not the world we live in. What do we do until then?

We work towards the solution. Women shouldn't be forced to incubate, nor should a human life be treated as trash.

Instead of directly and aggressively killing the life as the only "solution" the goal would be much different. While the result at the beginning would be much the same it would greatly shorten the time frame until we could offer people the very real choice to incubate or not without killing.

They are already protected in the same manner as the chicken, duck and fish. They all have the right to be a part of my breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Could i interest you in an abortion on toast?

This bill is ludicrous. A fertilized egg is not an infant. Millions of fertilized eggs are killed every day when they fail to implant on the uterine wall, without anyone knowing.

Wow what a new world that would be. Almost a brave new world. We could call them Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons.

No one is suggesting that it is equatable to an infant. If a fertilized egg fails to imlant... it dies... it is not killed. Slight difference. The point of this bill is to force a decision on Roe vs. Wade.

Science dictates that a unique life is formed when the egg cell is fertilized by the sperm cell. That is not disputable. If it attaches and begins to develop, then it is alive and human. Thus...

Whether it should be entitled to basic human rights is the question. This bill seems to be designed to address that.
