The Merchant Marines are not a military service per se, however there is no war that has been fought that could been engaged without them. They did get veteran status after WWII in 1988. The other mariners that served in Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Conflicts are still waiting. They are always in hostile waters during war and have the highest casualty rate in war than any of the services. Just setting the record straight here.
