Typical democrat thinking NEW TAXES will solve it.

Chapdog

Abreast of the situations
I knew it was just a matter of time. Last month he was talking about raising gas tax and toll's. Now hes go even more tax increases planned:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/01/patrick_propose.html

To make up for the shortfall in revenue – and avoid further budget cuts – Patrick is proposing a slew of new taxes and fee increases. Those plans include:

Meals tax -- increase the statewide meals tax by 1 percentage point, to 6 percent.

Hotel tax – increase the statewide hotel tax by 1 percentage point, to 6.75 percent. Combined with the meals tax, it would raise $148 million.

Alcohol tax – eliminate a tax exemption on sales of alcohol, soda, and candy. Currently, food sold outside of restaurants is exempt from the state’s 5 percent sales tax, so the governor wants to eliminate that exemption for certain items. In total, it would raise $150 million.

RMV fees – increase a variety of fees that residents pay when they go to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. All told, $75 million would be raised.

Telecommunication tax – eliminate a tax exemption for telecommunications companies, which would raise about $50 million.

Bottle deposit fees – the state’s 5-cent charge on carbonated sodas, beer, and malt beverages would be expanded to also include non-carbonated beverages like sports drinks, water, and juices. It would raise $20 million in state revenue.

If states that can't deficit spend aren't given a line of credit they'll be forced to raise taxes or cut down into the arteries - there's no more fat left.

Do you have any idea what a minuscule impact when compared to the budget shortfalls that legislative paycuts would make?

Yes I'm sure that most cuts that could be made would, in themselves, be only miniscule. That is not to say that they combined effect would be negligible, something that libtards seem to forget.

Democrat:"CUTTING X WOULD BARELY SAVE ANYTHING!"

"CUTTING Y WOULD NOT EVEN REDUCE THE BUDGET BY 2%"

"YOU CAN'T CUT Z! CUTTING Z ALONE WOULD HAVE NO EFFECT ON THE DEFICIT!"

Sane Person: Uh. What if we cut X, Y, and Z together?

Democrat: NOOOOOOZ! A much more logical solution is to develop a new method of exacting taxes!

This is eliminating an exemption. Not raising taxes per sie. Like elliminating the oil companies freebies.

I am not sure how the bottle deposit fees would raise income. Or do you pay sales tax on the deposit fee? I do agree all the similiar containers should be treated the same in this respect. ie just closing a loophole.

I am not for raising taxes, but I am for everyone paying their share and not spending more than you have coming in.

I am eliminating the exemption for you being taxed for breathing.

Previously the entire human race had been exempted, but no longer. It's not a new tax, it's a repeal of previous exemptions gah!

So you can't discuss the issues I raised that were directly related to the thread? and just throw out a pathetic strawman?

And you talk about my replies being lame oneliners and such.

Well I'll give you that in Mass. they probably have a lot more to cut than in, say, Alabama.

don't those taxes hurt the poor more?

No , just the working poor. But that has been the target for many years.
They cannot afford to buy lobbyists and have to work instead of protest.

why again I am for a pure flat rate % tax on all earned income with NO exemptions or deductions.

Chap, Repubs often lack the balls to cut spending, but in bad times when faced with increasing taxes or cutting spending, they will always cut spending and not increase taxes like Dems do.

Beautiful post, maybe we should start adopting their strategy when it comes to increasing taxes, we can say shit like:
"Why would you bother to increase taxes on hotels? It will hardly generate any revenue at all, it would have no effect on the deficit!"

Unless it was the past 8 years where they inexplicably raise spending while cutting taxes and create huge budget deficits.

Hes been non stop talking about tax increases for months now. If he doesn't deliver on being buddies with obama then I see no use for him and I will vote whoever runs against him in the next election.

I mean in an environment where they are sort of faced with an ultimatum, where circumstances or the public demand action. There wasn't really that sense of urgency until just last year.

Well, I'm not surprised the Rs lost power, they didn't do anything they said they would do and did quite a bunch of stuff neither party ever promises to do.

If you haven't felt betrayed by the R party in the past 8 years and are still willing to trust them to do what you vote them in to do, well..

You're more of a believer than I am. I plan to ride the current R party elected like a rented horse and ensure they don't stray so far again. I'm pissed and I refuse to let uber-Christians continue to have the only voice that matters in my party.

It seems to me that the elimination of a tax exemption is in fact a tax increase. I have to ask. Can you please explain what you mean here?

Immie

In my view that is just doing away with an exemption since the non exempt businesses have been paying the tax all along.

Ending a free ride/loophole that was no doubt lobbyist paid for.

How about the bottle deposit thing? How does that generate new revenue for the govt? and is it fair to apply it to other beverage containers if you are going to have it on some? Should the contents of those containers determine if a deposit is required?
