Long Island House member Carolyn McCarthy is gearing up for a primary challenge to newly appointed NY Senator Kirsten Gillibrand:

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), who is leading the Democratic opposition to Gillibrand, will today begin building the structure of a 2010 primary challenge, a McCarthy aide said.

This is good news for progressives. But not because McCarthy is progressive. She really is not. But it is still good news for progressives. I'll explain why on the flip.

As I wrote above, this is good news for progressives, if they know how to use it. McCarthy is no Jerrold Nadler (D-NYC). Indeed, she is probably less progressive than Gillibrand on the issues (other than gun control.) But Gillibrand's appointment by New York governor David Paterson is not popular among NY Dems, according to a newly released Quinnipiac poll, which shows 42% approve/43% disapprove of the Gillibrand appointment. Gillibrand will be moving quickly left to shore up this weakness.

Progressives should demand it. But they must demand it of all primary candidates for the Senate seat. Let the progressive bidding begin. This is why every office holder should be primaried in my view.

what a dumb ass bitch. gillibrands primary won't be until 2012. figures for her though. she doesn't know what a barrel shroud or folding stock is in a rifle, she wouldn't know when the us senator primaries are for the position she wants.

No, she has to win the seat in 2010 in order to hold it.

Eugh. Hope not, but there is no telling considering the whackos in NY.

I'm hoping for a challenge from the left of McCarthy, before I go jumping on her bandwagon. She's a mixed bag. The idea that she is some kind of whacko is pretty funny, from where I am sitting.

so NY will hold a special election in 2010 for this seat, that would be up for election in 2012 anyway?

Yeah as far as I know. Ever article published about that seat, ever since Hillary was named SOS, has mentioned the ability to fund-raise as being important because the seat must be defended in 2010.

They should just change the rules to hold a special election right off, this whole process was a terrible debacle, not only here, but even worse in IL. And if we had a special election here, you wouldn't be getting that blue dog I will tell you that.

She's to the right of Gilbrand, probably, on everything but the gun issue. Righties fascination with her, when there are reps who actually want to ban all guns, is bizarre, and amuses me. Which is why I posted this.

Yep, just two years without a democratically elected rep, no biggie.

The New York constitution allows a temporary appointment by the governor until a special election can be held unless there is an election within a year (or so I believe). IMHO, they shouldn't allow the governor a temporary appointment at all, and should just hold the election as soon as possible.

well no fricking wonder that NY has a budget problem also.

Well she has actively done more to pursue that goal than any other Representative or Senator I can think of besides maybe Schumer.

Well, she lost her husband and came very close to losing her son, who was horrifically wounded in that attack.

You know how people can be funny about things like that.

what i'd like to know is why her husband and son weren't capable of defending themselves? oh yeah, NY doesn't like their subjects being able to do that.

Russ Feingold has proposed a constitutional amendment to require special elections to fill Senate vacancies. It will not go anywhere but it should.

Paterson's poll numbers are diving. He's in big trouble. The whole thing would be funny if it weren't for the fact that we're stuck with her for at least two years.

There are different reasons I'm sure for his poll numbers. Some just are going to be infuriated at his bad-mouthing of Caroline Kennedy, some just at his incompetence. But here is something that no one has mentioned and it's playing a huge part in this.

New York is a Superstar state. Straight up - they don't want to be represented by some fatass from rural NY. Sorry, but thems the facts.

And Schumer had a big hand in pushing this precisely because he knows that NY is a superstar state and he's sick of getting upstaged by Superstars. He is without a doubt, the biggest, most disgusting camera whore I have ever seen.

let me tell you about 'superstar' states. the cities will soon regret dominating the entire state with it's politics and leaving the rural areas out in the cold left to deal with the majority rules set. It's starting to happen in Illinois because of chicago, it's going to happen in Cali because of san fran and LA, and it's going to happen to NY soon.

schumer is a putz and about as unamerican as they come. you should have gotten rid of him in the 90s

thats only for chicago. I dont' know if you have commies in newyork or not......yet. but trust me. The illinois politicians are feeling the heat because of chicagos overbearing. It's bound to happen in NY as well.
