Belarusian opposition politician Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said on Monday she was ready to lead Belarus and called for the creation of a legal framework to ensure a new fair election could be held.

An estimated 100,000 opposition protesters rallied in Belarus's capital on Sunday - the biggest demonstrations yet against the disputed re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko, even as the leader rejected calls to step down and hold new polls.

Speaking in a video address from Lithuania, Tikhanovskaya urged security and law enforcement officers to switch sides from Lukashenko's government, saying their past behaviour would be forgiven if they did so now.

The moment that Trump, in his moronic stupidity, attempts to influence this then the undecideds will come out on the side of Lukashenko and many people will die.
Let it be.

Yanqui, fuck off.

United States, and especially Trumpf, have very little influence or leverage in Republic of Belarus.

My concern is that Lukashenko will be so desperate to cling to his autocracy he will surreptitiously invite Vladimir Putin to "influence" events in Belarus.

Zero chance that the Kremlin will allow Belarus to drift outside it's sphere of influence, or to allow liberal democratic activists or Belarusian nationalists to gain the upper hand.

I believe that Putin will stand well clear- unless Trump blunders in, even in his guise as ' friend of Europe '. The Belarusians want a different president, not a different democracy.
One whiff of US interference and this will explode.

No, there is a clear and profound divide in the republuc between Belarusian nationalists and Russophiles. It has been that way for centuries. Society is divided between those who instinctively desire a union with Russian Federation, and western-looking Belarusian nationalists and liberals. Sidebar: my Great great grandfather was put in a Siberian labor camp by the tsar for participating in the 1864 Polish-Belarusian nationalist uprising against tsarist authority.

Belarusian identify has always been framed by their relationship with Russia, and all positive and negative overtones associated with that. To the extent Belarusians even think about United States it takes a backseat to that.

I agree in principle that Trump is toxic, and no legitimate world democratic movements want to be seen in public with him.

Belarus has an insane president. Paranoia is a mental imbalance. He's been torturing his opposition.

Over half of Belarusian households already own firearms- so that's a kick up the ass for gun-runners and seditionists.

What did Belarus ever do that was so wrong, anyways?

Probably the least genocidal country in European history.

President Lukashenko is Europe's last true dictator, uses violence and oppression to silence political opposition groups.

He still has a state security service still called KGB. That takes balls.

On the flipside, in my opinion, Belarusian women, on average, tend to be the most beautiful females in the East Slavic world.

Well- you already have a personal oar in the water. I'm just a newspaper reader.

Lukashenko promises fresh elections in Belarus after new constitution is adopted via nationwide referendum

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been defiant in defending last week’s controversial election victory, has suddenly relented, saying new elections could be held – but only after a new constitution is adopted.

Buying time to round up the ' ring-leaders '.

How many did Lukashenko kill?
Not many, is the correct anwser.

Meanwhile, the Capitalist Individualist Democratic Republic of the USA has killed up to millions since Lukashenko came to power in the war on terror.

Capitalism, communism, world religions, have killed tens of millions.

I was against the war on Iraq and put my money where my mouth is by participating in civil protest.

I would much rather live under the political system of the United States than the Republic of Belarus. And so would you.

I will say that by the standards of world dictatorships, the autocracy of Lukashenko is relatively benign. But that is an extremely low bar to set, and most certainly rings hollow to those democratic activists who have been beaten and imprisoned by Belarusian KGB.

Oh please, you can't seriously compare the collateral damage of the USA enterprise with a country the size and global influence and power projection of Belaruse.

I didn't even know whether it was closer to Latvia, Turkey or Georgia until this episode.
That said, this leader must go. 40 years? That is no democracy. They need to revisit the defintion.
More than 10 years is an autocracy or monarchy.

Belarus has held out as the most White nation, that title used to go to Poland, but since then Poland has gotten too Capitalist, and has brought in some Asian Vietnamese, Bangaldeshi & Indian immigrants.

The USA, might have more "Good areas" than Belarus, it also has much more "Terrible areas"

There might not be super affluent communities like Scarsdale, in Belarus, but there's also no Detroit in Belarus, where it is super dangerous to walk around due to crime & murder by civilians.

Besides, the fact that Belarus hasn't kill much, in it's whole history, and still isn't despite being a Dictatorship, draws to my arguments.

That most mass murder happens in certain ethnics, ones which are more subservient, aggressive, and apathetic.

It seems Dictatorships don't actually change too much.

Look at Putin he's about as murderous as Kruschev or Gorbachev were.

So, why is that, consider Putin's Russia is far more Capitalist?

Some people are just the way they are, a cancer of humanity.

Ukrainians have killed loads of people out of Anarchy.

They had militias out of Anarchy do just that in the Massacres of Wolyn, and Eastern Galicia killing 100,000 Poles, and in the Massacre of Uman they killed 30,000 Poles, and in the Khmelnytsky Uprising they killed about 1,000,000 - 2,000,000 Poles.

Actually, Ukrainians out of Anarchy, might have killed more Polish people, than have the big government strong Russians.

Then, again Ukrainians despite being relatives of Belarussians have a much different history.

Belarussians are mostly just Ruthenians who survived the Polish, Lithuanian & Russian occupations.

As opposed to Ukrainians who despite also being Ruthenians, who have a lot of Cossack blood, and Cossacks were basically losers, criminals & derelicts who left Poland, Russia, Lithuania, etc. etc. to become Horsemen out on the Steppes.

Cossacks are kind of like Slavic Hillbillies, volatile, dumb, derelicts who wanted to get away from Statehood.

Every rigged election is another nail in the coffin of democracy. Currently, there are more nails than wood.

I have been to Belarus several times and know exactly what it is like there.

Much to admire about the people and the nation.

On the flip side, anyone nostalgic for the USSR will find a lot to like about Belarus. Russian nationals who visit Belarus tell me it is like a nostalgia trip for them, like stepping back in time to the heyday of the USSR - in both good ways (less crime, less grotesque consumerism) and bad ways (autocracy).
