Speed limit upped to 80 mph in central Utah

The speed limit on a portion of Interstate 15 has been increased. From south of Nephi to about Scipio, it is now legal to drive 80 miles an hour.

The new speed limit follows a law change last year that gives transportation officials authority to increase the limits, but only after thorough studies.

However, Trooper Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol says don't expect to be able to drive 10 miles over the posted limit without a problem.

"Even though the speed limit has increased in these areas, we just expect them to maintain good driving decisions as they're out there," Roden said. He says troopers plan to closely monitor the area for now to try to get that message to drivers.

What is your speed limit where you live? Ive been told by out of state drivers that Utah drivers are more rude then people in New York & California....ha ha

Hey Chloe,

This site seems kinda dead today , I think there may be a few hangovers involved.

So many cars are now able to drive safely at these speeds I think it a great idea.

I'm no expert in the geography of Utah, but is there actually anything in central Utah to crash into?

The US actually has one of the slowest freeway speed limits in the developed world. In Europe the limit is usually around 85 MPH. So, 80 MPH is an improvement. I wish we'd pass a law that would up it to 80 everywhere.

Once we privatize the interstate highway system and China is running it they will up the speed limit to 100.

Mormons are rude drivers, perhaps it will even out the population for non mormons here.:)

I dont know any jewish people. I only know mormons out here because its about 90% mormon population.

You have the Mormons, we have the Orthodox Jews here in NYC. They are the most discourteous drivers. They go by their own set of rules.

So all the cab drivers up there are Orthodox Jews?

I have seen cabbies in NY do some wild stunt driving and no one seems to pay them any attention.

No, she's talking about discourteous drivers. You know. Going the speed limit, using turn signals and stuff. You know. Discourteous...

I think Utah's more along the lines of 2/3 Mormon. Of course, most Mormons are packed into the rural areas, and the population probably does rise to 90% Mormon there. In Salt Lake City they're a 40% or so plurality, not a total majority like in most other parts of the state, and that throws the statistics off.
