Kinda Surprising

Blagojevich went ahead and appointed a replacement, someting that the dems definitely did not want him to do. It looks like he is trying to be as big of a problem as he can possibly be.

"Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich of Illinois has named Roland Burris, a former state attorney general, to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the United States Senate.

Mr. Blagojevich, who faces federal corruption charges including allegations that he tried to sell Mr. Obama’s former senate seat for a high-paying job or money, had not been expected to try to fill the seat. As recently as ten days ago, his lawyer, Edward Genson, said he would not attempt to make an appointment, since Senate leaders had indicated they would not accept anyone whom the beleaguered Mr. Blagojevich had appointed.

The Democratic leaders of the Senate repeated that view on Tuesday, issuing a statement saying it was “truly regrettable that despite requests from all 50 Democratic Senators and public officials throughout Illinois, Governor Blagojevich would take the imprudent step of appointing someone to the United States Senate who would serve under a shadow and be plagued by questions of impropriety.”

The statement continued, “We say this without prejudice toward Roland Burris’s ability, and we respect his years of public service. But this is not about Mr. Burris; it is about the integrity of a governor accused of attempting to sell this United States Senate seat. Under these circumstances, anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus.”

The leaders concluded by saying the appointment was “unfair to Mr. Burris, it is unfair to the people of Illinois and it will ultimately not stand.” They called on the governor once again to resign.

Mr. Burris, 71 and a Democrat, is a longtime political player in this state, who has run for governor before, including mounting a primary challenge against Mr. Blagojevich. Mr. Obama backed him over Mr. Blagojevich in that race.

its too bad that politicians from both sides of the aisle are corrupt....it is ironic that dems have long brayed about republican corruption and now we are seeing a hefty amount of democrat corruption.

I am suprised he could get someone to accept a nomination. Marked for life, this appointee will be.

He better hope that there was no cash changing hands between his people and Burris'. If anyone finds even a lunch paid for by Burris there will be screaming like we've never heard before.

Immie

It doesn't matter, they can't allow him to appoint the new Senator. I don't know if that's fair to this guy, but it's not going to happen.

And yes Water, he did accept.

What a stupid move. I can't believe anyone would actually accept that. He really must have absolutely nothing going for him right now.

He doesn't have anything going for him now except that he's still governor. He claims he is innocent and the only thing for him to do at this point is to act like he's innocent, which is what he's doing. Appointing Burris is the only sensible thing he has done.

And I don't know that the Senate has the power to refuse Burris. On what basis?

If Burris hasn't done anything wrong and is a reasonable appointment he should be seated and the world can move on. if I were Blagojevich and Burris were rejected I would name a new appointee every single day henceforth anon.

Air America say's he can't be rejected by law. The only qualifications are age and citizen.
He's in.
Theres a court case cnbc recalls that it can't be reversed

LOL. Maybe he will do that.

But right now the IL attorney general is saying he won't even process the paper work, and Harry Reid is saying they won't seat him, so I don't know how this is going to get through.

If that's true, then I guess he will be seated. I'm glad that he picked an African American then. I think it's something the Republicans are going to make a big stink over, but they will always find something.

....
If he didn't appoint someone, then they'd say that he didn't do his job, or that this is an admission of guilt.

likely he decided to be as big a pain in the ass he can be since his days as a politician and a free man are numbered

must be pissed that more politicians are not rushing to his defense...or may be he is just nuts
