Yeehaw, Dano's Privatize Libraries Idea Comes to Fruition!

I looked at the picture of the protesters:

Anyone who's lived around poor people can tell you they are not dressed poor, nor look it.

This is the same shit I used to see in leftwing protest rallies that I HAVE been in or been near to, no poor people, just those who claim to act on their behalf.

Hilarious. Actually, no wait, it isn't. It's fucking frightening.

I'm sorry Super but that is a theory, probably the theory on which libraries were started but it is simply not reality.
I've lived poor, even one friend I had who lived in the back basement of his Mom's shit apartment in one of the shittiest neighborhoods had a bunch of books, he didn't read them. Books, especially used books are NOT expensive, book fairs at school you can get books for like 5 or 10 cents each, ditto for garage sales.
The poor have access to them but they don't care. That's a problem in this country but it's not because the library is accessible or not.

Thats just great, Dano. So lets ditch the public libraries because the poor can always buy used books or hit garage sales.

Do you realize how ridiculous that is?? That the poor's access to literature and knowledge in books is to be based on what other people read and don't want to keep??

And I guess computers and internet access is out there for pennies too??

And the public libraries are not meant to serve ONLY the poor. They serve the entire population.

Dano, you have suggested that the poor will be able to buy cheap used books and such at garage sales.

Please tell us where they will have access to reference materials?? Encyclopedias, medical reference books and such? Nothing that they will need to buy, just use as a reference.

And the free internet access? Is this going to be found at garage sales and used computer stores?

Also, there have been plenty of studies that show reading comprehension to be one of the fundamentals of learning. And anyone who doubts that an education is usually the difference between poverty and self-reliance.

Wow! Look Dano! Liberals do occasionally learn!

:D <- Disclaimer, something about sarcasm here.

Dano has been my inverse decision compass for several years. I just go the opposite way he does and am correct well over 90%.

even fools have their use.

Hey a 30 yr old set of encyclopedias will be fine for the poor. It is not like they had them before is it?

I promoted a great idea years ago to privatize libraries and now in Philly they are doing exactly that with some of the libraries. :)

Instead of having government run them off forced taxation, they will instead be funded and run privately:
"Mayor Nutter said yesterday that five of the 11 library branches once scheduled to close permanently on Thursday are instead on track to be taken over by private foundations, wealthy individuals, companies, and community development corporations."
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/2...ary_branches_may_be_saved.html?cmpid=16850266

Wow, this is great, I mean it's really not that radical an idea, many people go into Chapters and read the books there for free, then they may buy them. What's wrong with a business that rents books?

Contact your community reps and urge them to privatize libraries, helping to reduce government, the deficit and allow more freedom!

I bet you 50 dollars there will be no libraries in Philly in 10 years.

Philly is giving away a great asset.

It's not ridiculous at all, the main point for young kids is to learn to read, you don't need absolute specific books for that, just general children's books.
And if I go to a garage sale or book fair, I can certainly find books on any subject and for differing age groups. It's not perfect but far more than enough to make do with.
I think you are forgetting the point of helping others and charity is not to make life 100% easy for them and give them anything they want but for them to have enough to get by on and work for the rest from there.

And I guess computers and internet access is out there for pennies too??
This part I don't get. A computer is a luxury, ditto for internet access, were we deprived because we didn't have them at earlier points in our life?
And yes you can get a cheap computer and cheap internet access, obviously not for pennies, but pennies a day in the long run.

And the public libraries are not meant to serve ONLY the poor. They serve the entire population.
I am fully aware of who they were MEANT for, that isn't an automatic link to who actually ends up using them.

You know Dano I have been to several garage sales this year and have yet to find a book on repairing OHV Briggs engines....
I thought you said I could find anything there?

Can you get any mre rediculious defending your faith?

You'd never find the books I read at any garage sale, that is total bs. I'm sure you can find your run of the mill best seller stuff, and probably even some classics, but you are not getting much more than that.

Hey a 30 yr old set of encyclopedias will be fine for the poor. It is not like they had them before is it?
An interesting point.
I actually tried selling the encyclopedias we had at a garage sale we had as they took up too much space and since we had gotten internet access they were pretty much obsolete but no one bought them, even though they were only 25 cents a volume.
People don't want them because they have other, better choices.
I ended up getting my brother to reluctantly take them, I asked him about them a couple of years later and he admitted that he threw them out because they got mouldy in his basement.

You see this just illustrates my point with you older guys on here, you see value in that which no one does anymore.

Let's get this straight.

They are GIVING AWAY libraries. Not selling them. GIVING AWAY to private individuals. They are taking the poor peoples money and giving it to the rich.

The mayor who thought of this...

I did NOT say you could find anything there, I said this:

You get a good enough variety.
I doubt you could find that book in the library and almost certainly not in the rural library that you would have us right? You'd probably have to order it.

Honestly, this is so overblown, does government provide clothes? No. Is anyone naked? No. People can afford books. The real problem with not enough reading is will power.

Yeah like a library!

Man you are just so self skewering.

I for one wish more Republicans would be as outright and honest about this stuff as you are. Things would be much easier for the Democrats.

LOL, there is no money to give, they are losing money on them and in those cases without as much people served, hence why they were going to get cut.
Nor do they belong to anyone in the first place other than taxpayers.

The mayor who thought of this is brilliant, he not only cut something to save money, he found private entities that will take over them and keep them around to still serve even if in more limited capacity.

.

Its a luxury? When was the last time you were in school? Nevermind, I don't think you would get the connection.

The computers and internet access in public libraries are not important because they allow people to surf chat sites and porn. They enable young kids without internet access at home to do research and learn more. This equates to a better education.
