There is something between "Stay the Course" and "Cut and Run", the Democrats are about to educate some neo-cons on this!:clink: :clink: :clink: :clink:

Everyone is chuffed to bits that the Dems have won the Senate, but pretty soon the balloons and bunting will come down and we will need to see how the Dems will deal with Bush's debacle....

Yep reality is gonna be a bitch.
That's because it already is one now. Bitchiness is conserved: it can never be created or destroyed, it only changes form. And that slowly.

Realistically, Congress simply is not going to be able to pull the troops out of Iraq in January or February. Even if it were advisable -- and I still think it might well be -- it isn't politically possible against the will of the President and the Iraqi so-called government. There's only one way they could do it and that option isn't even going to present itself until, I believe, March, when the Pentagon asks for it's next emergency (sic) spending bill.

Cutting off the funds would force them to bring the troops home. I doubt Congress will have the will to do that, however.

The can, however, make the debate on that inevitable emergency (sic) spending bill very, very public. They can ask uncomfortable questions about why this spending wasn't put into the Pentagon's budget for the fiscal year to begin with. They can ask for an explanation of exactly what would happen, in detail, if Congress refused the appropriation.

One thing that the Congress can and should do, from day one of the next session, is to come clean with the American people. Say that the reason we still have troops in Iraq is because we broke it in the first place, so we have to clean up the mess. In other words, assert clearly and distinctly that the war was a stupid mistake from the outset and that mistake puts us deeply in debt to the Iraqi people.

That's something I expect that the American people can understand.

I agree. We should have been saying this long ago.

what makes you people think thes clowns are gonna be any better than the old clowns? do you really think that they're going to bring the troops home anytime soon??? fat chance!!!!

they won't with hold a penny from the military; they've been screeming that the repubs cut them off, they won't risk the wrath of the people if they "abandon" the troops by cutting off funding....

That's preposterous. There was only ONE mandate with this election: the voters demanded a new plan for Iraq. And they will get one.

No, the troops won't come home right away; but they will come home a decade or so earlier than they would have with "stay the course." 2 years tops; I'd put it closer to a year.

since when do the voters get what they want???? what planet are you living on????

No, they are going to redefine it... They'll say things like, "We broke it, now we have to fix it." And do you know what? We'll still be there.

I belive with the promise of real oversight members of the administration and people in the pentagon will be more responsable to the American people and any decisions will be more reality based instead of make belive.

The Democratic Congress cant fix Bush's Iraq mess overnight. They may not be able to fix it at all... but they can and did stop the president from full steem ahead over the cliff!

I don't, no. The Dems have made noises like they will. All I'm saying is that they have the opportunity to deliver and, failing that, the opportunity to keep the national debate focused where it ought to be: on the people who perpetrated this in the first place and the reasons why it was a really stupid idea.

Maybe, just maybe, people will learn enough to prevent something like this happening again. At least for a while.
