This was a tactic used by Nazi's and mao/Stalinist. They would simply deny the govt ever did X, and if you said they did you were also sent to the gulags.

You're 100% right. I was watching this documentary on Grant, and the civil war then reminds me of the one we are in now. The union army was mostly volunteer and they were dedicated to fighting for, what was still considered a governmental-social experiment IE the US.
Many of them were willing to die for the flag and preserving this great country. How many are today?
I liken it less to the Civil War (which was the Federal Government illegally invading, slaughtering, and enslaving half the republic to free a tiny handful of slaves slightly more quickly--the only country in the Western Hemisphere to have to go to war to abolish slavery) and more to the French Revolution, where mobs of degenerates with no legitimate authority whatsoever massacred, persecuted, and lynched others on a whim with impunity until the whole country was burnt to the ground and everyone had been terrorized out of their rights.
