I can think of at least one doctor who was both Jewish and Polish, but the Polish Government did not consider him Polish after the war, so he became American. Jews and Poles were very intermixed culturally. Dividing them was traumatizing for everyone.

While Polish Catholics & Polish Jews share about 15- 30% of the same genes.

There's still stark differences, Poles being pro-Jesus Catholics, and Polish Jews speaking Yiddish first, overwhelmingly.

The interwar period was somewhat confusing. Poland had not existed for almost 100 years, and then was suddenly thrown together. Many people who later considered themselves Poles barely spoke Polish anymore. They either learned German or Russian as the language they needed to know. And Polish was not a well defined language, it bleed into Ukrainian and other languages towards the borders, rather than having a sharp language border.

So suddenly they were putting together a country, and pushing a language. Jewish Poles were eager to be part of this country, and eagerly pushed Polish. There was some antisemitism in interwar Poland, and it definitely was fascist, but Jewish Poles could live with that. Obviously, Nazi Occupied Poland was very antisemitic, so many Jewish Poles fought hard to liberate Poland.

After the war, the Polish Government decided that they did not want minorities within their country. They make stark decisions on who was Polish and who was not. There were people who really felt Polish who were suddenly told to leave, IMMEDIATELY!!! I was a sad turn of events.

I will defend the post war Polish Government on one account. While they did push for "racial purity", at least they didn't kill people over it like the Nazis did.
