The first human testing of Moderna Inc.’s experimental vaccine against the novel coronavirus has begun, the National Institutes of Health said Monday.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the NIH, said the study began at the Kaiser Permanente National Health Institute in Seattle and that four people were given the vaccine on Monday. The NIAID, which is funding the research, said that as far as it knows, these are the first people to get the vaccine.
The vaccine is known as mRNA-1273 and was developed by scientists at NIAID and those at Moderna.
The study is beginning earlier than had been predicted by Anthony Fauci, director of NIAID, in recent weeks.
The federal agency said there will be about 45 patients in the research, which is called an open-label study. That means that, in the immediate stage to assess safety, there will be no control group of patients.
Giving the possible vaccine to a human is believed to be the first such step in the research so far. The first stage of the research will involve examining whether the experimental vaccine induces an immune response in the patients and whether it is safe.
