What is about Socialism that gets Democrats excited?

A hand up is temporary and does not require billions in continued subsidies annually; especially for farm programs to pay for not growing crops.

In other words, a hand up is an investment with a return? Would you also agree that a hand out is considered redistribution because those getting it provide nothing of value for what they receive?

Agreed. That was the reason for my comment that paying farmers (or property owners) not to grow crops has no return and provides nothing of value except higher prices for farm products.

The point is to reduce supply to increase prices so farmers make a profit.

So no examples of where that's happened?

What you claim about higher prices might apply if we didn't import so many agricultural products.

Fair enough at what point are they responsible for themselves, I believe in a hand up, not cradle to grave welfare.

Unless it's you getting that welfare...like being born in a public hospital, attending public school, skipping college to join the army where you get taxpayer-funded training, taxpayer-funded education, taxpayer-funded room, taxpayer-funded board, and taxpayer-funded health care, and then pull a taxpayer-funded pension once you leave, plus taxpayer-provided health care for the rest of your life, and taxpayer-provided funeral services if you're buried in a national cemetery.

So if that's your life path, then that there is cradle-to-grave welfare, entirely subsidized by taxpayers.

In other words, SOCIALISM!

It happens in the U. S. Plus, we artificially keep the price of sugar high.

My area had a lot of rice farmers. Government gave subsidies to the people who farmed the land that was usually leased to them by the land owner. Then, the government started paying the land owners who just quit leasing the land and kept the money. Welfare for non-farmers.

If we didn't import so many agricultural products that is government control of prices plus other countries would import less of our crops.

I've been able to buy corn in the summer for $.10/ear or less. Much of it isn't from the U.S.. A lot of that is being used for other things unrelated to eating.

Not every country from where we buy crops buys from us and vice versa.

I don't see all these artificially high prices you're claiming. In many places throughout the country, prices are affected far more by things totally unrelated to the government than government action. In areas where unions exist and are strong, the cost of living is very high and very little farming is done.

The prices are not necessarily high but not high enough for farmers to profit. In the example of sugar soft drink makers and others use corn syrup instead of sugar. Live Savers moved to Canada.

The point is why is the government giving money to farmers. You have made numerous posts complaining that your tax money is being used to give to others.

Is your contention that farmers being given this money do absolutely no farming?

Coke uses carbonated water, phosphoric acid, caffeine, caramel colour, natural flavor (their secret) and SUGAR. No mention of corn syrup.

Sugar (which can be sucrose or high-fructose corn syrup)[Coke ingredients]

Some of Cokes in the small glass (original) bottle from Mexico still contain sugar (and are very good)

The types of programs vary. Some is crop insurance. However, whether farmers work very hard is not the point. It is the government interfering in the free market to benefit some businesses over others.

I understand you do not get it!

The thing that attracts so many people to some sort of socialism is the shambling , ghastly silliness of the American version of capitalism. All capitalism is crap, but American Capitalism is like a ludicrous parody. Its bosses have stolen such vast amounts that they can, for the moment, get away with it, until (possibly even nastier) Chinese Capitalism catches up and passes.

^^^^Words spoken by a failure that can't make it on his own.

Precisely.

Freedom, the opportunity to advance as far as your ability and hard wok can take you.

How many people are emigrating to Socialist countries like Venezuela or Communist countries like Cuba or China?

They are leaving those countries on rafts and walking across mountains and deserts to get this land of freedom and opportunity.
