The market sees the sudden turn of events with the McCain/Palin ticket - thinks they might win - and knows if they do that's the end of renewable energy tax credits. All's the existing members of congress have to do is "hold out" til January 1st and it's dead and gone.
Sound strange from the crew that supports drilling, etc? Not at all. The last thing oil wants is a competitor - even a tiny one like wind and solar. That's why the 8 defeats of the ITC in the congressional vote were straight down party lines. I looked up the votes. Overwhelming majority of Republican senators voted against the house bill each time.
If the McCain/Palin ticket wins it means that the small town still rules in America. Maybe Hilary had it right, America doesn't need Big City intellectuals who've made politics a theology of representation (depends on who, right?). No, America needs pistol-packin mommas, cowboy hats, blue collar workers and "folks" who down boiler makers at the local bar. It just amazes me how the slave class in America worships its overseers - the ones who pretend they're "just like them" but who have destroyed their healthcare protections, pays them $10/hour, and would dump em on the street in a minute if they crossed them. In the last election, Ohio, a swing state that had seen its manufacturing base destroyed by corporate downsizing and overseas deployment in the previous 4 years, voted for GW Bush because they though he was closer to God than John Kerry. Didn't matter what the economics of the situation were or how much worse they've gotten for that state in the last 4 years.
I keep thinking that I'll wake up from this bad dream; that there's something about being an American that's more than bullshit cloaked in folklore. That we're not just jerks who substitute "attitude" or euphemisms for something substantial. But maybe it's not. Maybe that's who we really are. And people like Barack and Biden - really any sort of intellectual politicians - deserve the faintly disguised envy and contempt they receive.
Maybe we need to elect McCain to his 4 year presidency, or have him die in office and get Britney Spears' mom for the Interim president? Can you just see her as VP presiding over the venerable senate?
There's a marvelous Russian proverb that explains the xenophobic nature of that country perfectly, which Gorky said had two main problems - fools and bad roads. (We don't have the roads, but maybe we have the fools.)
"The peasant came to the commissar and complained loudly that his neighbor had a cow and he didn't have one.
"So, I'll get you a cow", said the commissar, "then you can be just like him".
No! No! said the peasant. That's not what I want!
And to the commissar's dismay the man complained even louder.
In exasperation he asked him, "So what is that you DO want?"
"I don't want you to give me a cow. I want you to kill his cow!"
If McCain/Palin win this race it means that anti-intellectualism is still the modus operandi in the US, and you can forget about young people participating in politics in the future. They'll get the message loud and clear: the elections are a dog and pony show put on by the oil companies every 4 years for the entertainment of the electorate.
