I know, it's heartbreaking, but the real reason we got independence was because the British were at war with the French and they felt that it wasn't worth holding on to the Colonies while they were fighting against such a big threat.
Now that I do agree with, but that has nothing to do with guns. Like I said, democratic elections help influence government. If the population wants freedom of speech, then it will be very difficult for a president or a political party to take away freedom of speech.
