Ralph Nader goes off on Barack Obama.

Nader -- who launched his 5th presidential campaign in February -- says the only thing different about Obama from previous Democratic presidential candidates is his race. "I haven't heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos," Nader says. "Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards."

Asked if he thinks Obama is trying to "talk white," Nader said, "of course….The number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency should be is to candidly describe the plight of the poor, especially in the inner cities and the rural areas, and have a very detailed platform about how the poor is going to be defended by the law, is going to be protected by the law, and is going to be liberated by the law," Nader said. "Haven't heard a thing."

Nader also says Obama wants to show he's not "another politically threatening African-American politician. He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up."

Whether he's correct or not, Nader is one of a handful of white politicians who can say these things with any degree of credibility.

I think he's refering to Obama's comprehensive plan to bring slavery back.

My point wasn't that he has credibility with "all liberals" .. all liberals don't have the credibility to touch on these issues as Nader can. Where he does have credibility is among those people who know exactly what the issues are that he's talking about.

Do you know much about those issues?

His point was the perception. There are serious issues within the black community that go far beyond "missing fathers" that Obama ain't touching .. for the very reasons Nader stated.

Now there is good argument about him doing what he think he has to do to be the president .. but there is also the truth that he is staging his image and that means not only not appearing too close to Black issues, but also staying away from women in scarves.
 
Nader...rings a bell. Isn't that the guy who is responsible for over 4,000 dead Americans and over 100,000 dead Iraqis?

No, that would be the American people for ever allowed paperless voting that was TOTALLY controlled by republicans to ever be used to elect a president.

Who do you blame for 2000.

The American people.

Nader is just the scapegoat that weakling democrats hide behind.

Think of it this way .. using your incorrect analogy .. Nader did the world a favor because Joe Lieberman would now be the president. Who you gonna blame for that one?

I think Nader is pretty far off base here. Obama has detailed fairly exhaustive proposals for pretty much every issue identified by Nader including payday loans, predatory lending generally and lead abatement. On asbestos, Obama at least has a history of attacking the problem. Additionally, Obama has a faily detailed proposal for dealing with urban poverty.

The fact that no one pays any attention to these things, including Nader, is more reflective of the fact that the poor and particularly urban poor issues are marginalized as a general matter.

Obama was involved in many community outreach programs in the poorer sections of Chicago and has asked the US to invest in inner city education and outreach iniatives at the federal level. Will people always be able to claim he's not doign enough? Yes. It still light years ahead of what the knuckledraggers are doing.

Nader does indeed pay attention to these things .. which is why he has credibility talking about it.

Most African-Americans has resigned themselves to a wait and see approach to how he will govern and what issues are most important to him. High on the list of most important issues in the black communtiy is the injustice of the criminal system. It's an evil that has been allowed to openly fester for years through both democratic and republican administrations. ONLY the Breen Party made it part of their platform .. a big reason why many people, including me, voted for Nader.

I'm not suggesting that I completely agree with Nader here .. but there is some degree of real to what he says.

Barack Obama can honestly claim to have made a difference on a matter of life and death.


Obama cites his role in Illinois' death penalty debate as proof he can solve problems through compromise.

While an Illinois state senator, Obama was key in getting the state's notorious death penalty laws changed, including a requirement that in most cases police interrogations involving capital crimes must be recorded.

The changes enacted in 2003 reformed a system that had sent 13 people to death row, only to have them released because they were later determine to be innocent or had been convicted using improper methods.

"Without Barack's energy, imagination and commitment I do not believe the very substantial and meaningful reforms that became law in Illinois would have taken place," said author Scott Turow, a member of the state commission that recommended many of the changes.

My meaning was unclear. I didn't intend to suggest that Nader doesn't pay attention to those issues, just that no one, Nader included, has bothered to pay attention to Obama's policy proposals on those issues. There are out there and he has highlighted them in some of his speeches. That's why this particular criticism rings hollow.

And sure, people voted for Nader, but "many" is a stretch and there is a reason he lost, and badly. Nader's views are way way out of the mainstream and his attempt to goad Obama into talk about these issues all the time is, like his campaign in 2000, destructive to the cause he professes to care so much about.
