He was acquitted on one charge. There was a mistrial on the other five.

I read "The Politician" by Andrew Young (Edward's assistant). Edwards convinced Young to claim he was the father of the child and the mistress lived with Young and his wife. Needless to say, Young's wife was not happy with the arrangement.

The money returned was not (necessarily) for personal matters but for claiming reimbursements of federal matching funds they did not qualify for or spending which was not allowed under FEC regulations.
